For those interested in the new LSTA grant program the Library of Michigan is launching, there will be informational webinars on Tuesday, September 27th at 3 pm and on Wednesday, October 19th at 9 am. The grant program is designed to provide Michigan libraries with the opportunity to develop innovative programs or services that have the potential to develop into sustainable regional or statewide programs, and include strong partnerships between libraries, and/or community groups or agencies. Applicants may propose a library program or service in any content area appropriate for library services, such as: * To develop an innovative service or program to meet a newly identified community need; * To meet the increased community demand for a service or resource; * To improve or develop new services to target populations, such as people from diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and individuals with limited functional literacy, limited English proficiency or limited information literacy skills. The grant program is competitive. The grant period will be from one to three years and funding will be for $50,000 to $225,000 per year up to a possible total of $500,000 over three years. Applications will be reviewed by the Library of Michigan staff and the LSTA Advisory Council as peer reviewers. No more than ONE to THREE grants will be approved. Eligible applicants include Michigan public, academic, school and special libraries as well as non-profit statewide organizations that serve Michigan libraries. On it you can find excellent digital collections that speak to Michigan history or more importantly, Michigan's place in American history. These primary resources can assist students and adult researchers who are needing access to photographs, diaries, oral histories, maps and more for class assignments, projects or personal research. The digital collections in MeL Michigana are also searchable from the search box you will see on the page. Included in MeL Michigana are 2 subscription resources: HeritageQuest Online<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-proq.php?database=HERI…> and Michigana: Sources in U.S. History Online<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=SMIH>. In Michigana: Sources in U.S. History Online, you can find actual published documents written by people who either lived that history or who knew/interviewed someone who did! Discover Michigan with Ron Rademacher

Hi everyone, We just had Ron Rademacher, author of the *Michigan Backroads* books, back for his final program in a three-part series. His programs were some of our best attended of the summer and many members of the audience were here for the third time. One gentleman even mentioned that Ron was so entertaining, he'd sit through the same three programs all over again. Doing Away With Computer Towers?!

We are in the process of revamping and updating our patron computers. One of the options we are looking at is doing away with the towers and going to a " Session Based Remote Desktop Infrastructure". Basically, it's putting all the computers on a remote server and handling everything from there instead of each individual tower. Has anyone done this, or know anyone who has? We are doing a trial with some borrowed equipment, but I would love real-world knowledge. This day-long, multi-state event will take place both in Lansing, Michigan and Indianapolis, Indiana. Speakers and participants will interact both in-person and remotely. The summit will feature a BIBFRAME overview and update from Beacher Wiggins (Director for Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access, Library of Congress) and a presentation from Linked Data industry leader Zepheira<https://zepheira.com/> on the implications for libraries. This summit is an opportunity for librarians to explore the possibilities of what a fully integrated Linked Data world means for libraries and our communities. This event will also provide updates and presentations exploring what is already happening to make that possibility a reality. We invite program proposals from September 14, 2016 to November 7, 2016. Proposed programs should be either 20 minutes or 45 minutes in length, including time for questions. Proposals should be grounded in experience. They may explore projects, plans, collaborations, data analysis as well as other aspects of Linked Data creation and implementation. ALA Editions announces an exciting free AL Live interactive webcast, Filtering: The Man in the Middle, with Doug Archer, Bob Bocher, Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Jamie LaRue and Michael Robinson. This interactive webcast will last one hour and take place at 2 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016. Thanks to the good work of the ALA's Washington Office and others, there may be far more money available to libraries through the federal E-rate program. To take advantage of that, however, libraries must first adopt an internet safety policy that includes "technology protection measures"-filtering. This panel will address the details of the E-rate expansion, summarize the history of ALA and filtering, raise some new issues about specific filtering approaches and offer practical suggestions for libraries who may wish to pursue this new funding opportunity. Detroit Jazz Artist Available for Free Jazz Concerts and Educational Programming at Libraries this Fall

The RJ Spangler Trio has a performance grant that allows us to play free concerts for schools, non-profits, libraries, etc. We have openings in September, October, November & December. Please see a recent video of our lecture in August at Baldwin Public Library exploring the jump and swing jazz of the 40s and 50s: Jazz Lecture Series with RJ Spangler | | | | | | | | | | | Jazz Lecture Series with RJ Spangler | | | | About the program and performers: RJ Spangler speaks about the history of Detroit's jazz & blues roots and performs musical examples with an all-star band. RJ is a graduate of GPS, class of '75! About Larry: Born & raised in Aliquippa, Penn.,near Pittsburgh in 1947, where he got his start playing jazz, showing the ropes to his friend, jazz guitar great George Benson. Smith moved to New York where he played with some big names such as organist Shirley Scott, drummer Joe Chambers and multi-saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. For years, Smith bounced around from New York to New Jersey to Detroit (where he sunk roots after his mother moved here) and back. Larry had a special relationship with one the all-time great sax players - Sonny Stitt. Sonny knew & encouraged Larry going back to his teenage years, when passing through Pennsylvania. This lead to Larry touring with Sonny as a regular member of his group. Quite an honer for a man that plays the same instrument as the leader! In Detroit he lead his own bands & also played in Detroit jazz master Roy Brooks Artistic Truth band. Larry has a reputation as an old-school keeper of the bebop flame and a killer when it comes to the blues. As Charles Latimer said in the Metro Time "his specialty is ballads. He shuts his eyes, hunches his shoulders, and holds his saxophone like a prom date. The ballads are so touching they'd make the devil cry." Larry appears as a special guest on James Carter's 1996 Conversin' with the Elders & Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge disc, released in 2004. He has also toured with the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. Drummer RJ Spangler has appeared on over 60 recordings and has toured the US, Canada & Europe quite a few times. He lectures on Detroit jazz & blues history and beyond his trio, he leads the Planet D Nonet swing band as well as a blues band. His latest release is "This Is What We Do" w/ the RJ Spangler on the Eastlawn label. Guitarist Oliver Nevels is another veteran player whom has recorded & toured nationally with organist Charles Earland, appearing on two of his CDs, including "I Ain't Jivin' I'm Jammin" for the legendary Muse label. He also toured with organist Richard "Groove" Holmes. Bassist Greg Cook is a Detroit main stay, having proven himself playing with the top of Detroit's jazz scene: Geri Allen, Roy Brooks & Marcus Belgrave & many others. He toured Europe with soul great Bettye LeVette and held down the bass chair in Rat Pack show for countless performances.
