Join us for the Alpena Book Festival!

The 2016 Alpena Book Festival will take place Saturday, September 24^th from 10:00 am-7:00 pm in downtown Alpena. A full day event, the Festival includes panel discussions, author talks, meet and greets, and educational sessions for aspiring writers. Over 25 authors have committed their participation in this year’s Festival, spanning genres that include: inspirational writing, poetry, young adult, science fiction, literary fiction, mystery, Michigan based fiction and non-fiction, and graphic novelists. In what is a truly cooperative endeavor, the staff and volunteers from the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library, Blue Phoenix Books, Bob’s Bullpen, and Olivet Book and Gift are bringing together authors, illustrators, poets, and readers of all ages to the shores of Thunder Bay for a celebration of literacy and Michigan literary contributions. The festival has activities for all age groups, Ambassador Member of the Alpena Girl Scouts, Bailey Becker, is facilitating a children’s reading and writing activity for ages 3 and up and Children’s Librarian, Mary Clute, will be hosting a craft program at the library. While the event is free and open to the public, attendees may purchase a festival tote bag for a nominal fee, the proceeds of which benefit the READ adult literacy program at the Library. Each bag has a selection of Advanced Reader’s Copies provided by various publishers as well as a few convenience items, peppermints, pens, and bookmarks. Downtown Alpena businesses including Art in the Loft, As You Wish Bakery, Cabin Creek Coffee, Thunder Bay Winery and The Fresh Palate have generously donated their space to provide unique and fun settings for Festival activities. Cataloging for new Harry Potter "book"

Seeking advice from the collective... We just received the new Harry Potter "book." I put it in quotes because it is a script, not a story in the more traditional sense. My inclination is to put it in the ADULT FICTION collection, although since it is a script, it could also go into non-fiction (822). There are only a couple of other libraries in MeL who have it, and they're split about 50/50. I appreciate any thoughts / suggestions. Thanks in advance. MI Attorney General Reports - free offer

The Michigan Department of Attorney General prints their biennial reports every two years. Due to inventory numbers there are reports starting with 1933-34 to 2013-14 which are available to libraries at no cost. The Department of Attorney General cannot cover shipping costs but may be able to arrange hand-delivery when an AG staff member is in your area. Policy Request - Fund Balance

Hi, Everyone! Our library is considering a policy regarding our fund balance. I found a suggestion by the Government Finance Officers Association that governments should establish a formal policy that governs the level of fund balance as well as guidelines for increasing and decreasing the unrestricted fund balance. While we are not a government, we are under scrutiny by our County Board and think that having a set of guidelines in place may help us defend an increase or decrease of our fund balance. If you have a policy for your library or know that your municipality has one, I would certainly appreciate any examples that we can use to help shape one of our own. Thank you in advance, Megan

*Job Description* The Young Adult Services Coordinator has responsibility for planning and presenting activities for young adults—ages 13-19. *Job Objective* This position is primarily responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, scheduling, and coordinating young adult programs (ages 13-19). This position requires the development of recommendations for programs, policies, and procedures to improve young adult library services. The ideal candidate will create an environment where teens may engage more in the services of the library, where they feel accepted and motivated in pursing intellectual and recreational opportunities. There is collaboration with the Children’s Services Coordinator to include children’s programs, particularly in regard to the Summer Reading Program. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* - Ability to develop, schedule, and perform programs for young adults. - Knowledge of young adult literature. - Ability to read professional journals to increase knowledge of issues and resources to help with future plans for the division. - Ability to stays current with community needs, programs and issues. - Knowledge of the general principles and specific details of adolescent development. - Knowledge and sense of the community’s needs and desires for young adult library services. - Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of young adults. - Ability to work with MS Office to produce marketing materials for programming. - Knowledge in social media to engage teens and promote programs. - Ability to create meaningful relationships with community organizations and schools that serve young adults in order to facilitate services that meet the needs of the young adults. - Knowledge of the principles and issues/policies of intellectual freedom and the ability to apply that knowledge in a library setting. - Skill and ability to effectively listen, ask and answer questions; communicate with adults and children; effectively interact with staff; effectively read, write and speak; effectively organize and give presentations to groups of listeners, including storytelling, read aloud, drama and puppetry; prepare press releases and monthly reports; and prepare written materials for programs, flyers, tickets, and game boards. - Requires a genuine liking and understanding of children of all ages; enthusiasm, optimism, resourcefulness, flexibility and creativity; excellent interpersonal skills. - Serves as supervisor for subordinate employees assigned to the division. Responsible for the daily supervision of assigned employees. - Skill in problem solving skills. - Ability to think logically. - Ability and knowledge to assist and instruct patrons in the use of library materials, including online databases, Internet sources, and the online catalog. - Comfortable working with diverse age groups and populations. - Friendly with people who use the library, both patrons coming through the front door and staff. - Ability to communicate well with colleagues and the general public. - Ability to analyze and creatively solve problems related to the position. - Ability to work with enthusiasm and initiative. - Ability to assume more difficult duties as experience increases; other duties as assigned. - Ability to plan, organize, and implement BDL's Summer Reading program in coordination with the Children’s Services Coordinator. *Physical Requirements* Must be able sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate assigned equipment, including computers. *Education, Experience, and Training* Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited American Library Association university and two (2) years’ professional library experience as a librarian in a public library. The first being for children's staff: an interactive Inclusive storytime session with hands-on activities and implementation ideas with Bloomfield Township Public Library's Jen Taggart and Michigan Braille & Talking Book Library's Stephanie Wambaugh (Bridgid Turner from LARA will be speaking on behalf of Stephanie at our Marquette workshop). Pew Report: Book Reading, 2016

Write Michigan Short Story Contest

FYI that the Michigan Humanities Council grant deadline for the Prime Time Family Reading program is Nov. 1st. See below for more information.
