Maternity Leave Policies

Good afternoon, Library Land! I've been looking over our maternity leave policy in preparation for a staff member, and it's pretty antiquated. I'd love for anyone who's willing to share their policies with me. The employee is not eligible for the FMLA since she's not been here a year yet, so anything that deals with that situation, in particular, will be extremely helpful. Thank you, Danielle Reid, Director Reese Unity District Library 2065 Gates St., PO Box 413 Reese, MI 48757 Phone: (989) 868-4120 Fax: (989) 868-4123

Hi there, This might be of interest to you: https://www.eeoc.gov/wysk/what-you-should-know-about-pregnant-workers-fairne... Length of maternity leave is usually established by the organization, so updating that policy to give her more time off would be something you can also use to attract/retain employees. You may also use parental leave as a part of Unpaid Leave of Absence and allow either parent to use unpaid leave. We have it noted as needing to be used in the first 3 months of birth or adoption. Hello Danielle: Please note that there have been some changes in the federal laws surrounding pregnancy in the workplace. The EEOC recently updated their information: https://www.eeoc.gov/pregnancy-discrimination. Also, depending on how the library interacts with your municipality, (if, for example, the library's employee benefits are through the municipality), your municipality may also have an impact on the types of benefits available to this employee. Libraries working with pregnant employees will want to consult their attorneys in light of these new laws to ensure their policies are compliant. Take care! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D.
