Re: [Michlib-l] [all-tln] Magazine Binders

Lyon Township operates the same way as Auburn Hills - used to use them, discontinued when we went to curbside only at the beginning of COVID-19, now letting current and past copies circulate. Doesn't seem to be affecting wear and tear too much. Hello Library World,
I am reaching out to see what other libraries are doing with their serials. We at the Livonia Public Library are currently using magazine binders to protect our current issues. We are considering not continuing this practice, and we wanted to see what other libraries currently do. Here are the questions that we are looking at:
Do you currently or in the past have used magazine binders? If you have and don't anymore, have you seen an increase in wear and tear to your materials? Has theft been an issue? If you currently are using magazine binders how often do you have to replace them? If so, what is the cost to replace them? If you have used them in the past, but no longer do what was the reason that you discontinued using them?
If our library could get even a few responses we would be grateful. We are trying to see what other libraries practices are, so that we can make a decision on our practices.
Thank You,
Kristy Chase

We discontinued using ours sometime during COVID. We now circ current issues as well as older ones. I've not been made aware of any problems and haven't seen any myself. It does save a lot of processing time, too! On Tue, Jul 12, 2022 at 12:21 PM Jocelyn Levin <jlevin@ltpl.org> wrote:

We use non-locking magazine binders for the current issues, which do not circulate. Back issues circulate. Honestly, I never thought of circulating all issues, including currents. We are considering not continuing this practice, and we wanted to see what other libraries currently do. Here are the questions that we are looking at: Do you currently or in the past have used magazine binders? If you have and don't anymore, have you seen an increase in wear and tear to your materials? Has theft been an issue? If you currently are using magazine binders how often do you have to replace them? If so, what is the cost to replace them? If you have used them in the past, but no longer do what was the reason that you discontinued using them? If our library could get even a few responses we would be grateful. We are trying to see what other libraries practices are, so that we can make a decision on our practices. At Romulus we have a nice magazine shelving unit. We circulate the current and past 6 months of all magazines, 3 months if they are published 3-4 times a month (like newspapers). Patrons will read in the library and they check them out. We do have the occasional wear and tear. But it works for us and the damage is usually normal wear and tear you expect. I know several patrons that will grab a few especially if they are planning a road trip during the summer for easy reading. We really don't have a theft problem with serials. When we withdraw the older magazines our Friends group bundle several issues and then sell them. They are constantly being sold. When I worked at Melvindale, we sold the back issues as well, and they would always get purchased. I would keep that in mind too.
