Lyon Township operates the same way as Auburn Hills - used to use them, discontinued when we went to curbside only at the beginning of COVID-19, now letting current and past copies circulate. Doesn't seem to be affecting wear and tear too much.

Hi Kristy,
Auburn Hills used to use the locking magazine binders; however, we discontinued  putting our magazines in the binders after the library re-opened after being closed to the public for a period of time due to COVID.

We now let current issues as well as past issues circulate and we have not had a problem with theft thus far.  The magazines are clearly marked with our library's mailing label which includes the address.
We have not noticed any increased wear and tear on the magazines either. Patrons seem to enjoy checking out the current issue and they are being returned when due.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [all-tln] Magazine Binders

Hello Library World,

I am reaching out to see what other libraries are doing with their serials. We at the Livonia Public Library are currently using magazine binders to protect our current issues. We are considering not continuing this practice, and we wanted to see what other libraries currently do. Here are the questions that we are looking at:

Do you currently or in the past have used magazine binders?
If you have and don't anymore, have you seen an increase in wear and tear to your materials?
Has theft been an issue?
If you currently are using magazine binders how often do you have to replace them?
If so, what is the cost to replace them?
If you have used them in the past, but no longer do what was the reason that you discontinued using them?

If our library could get even a few responses we would be grateful. We are trying to see what other libraries practices are, so that we can make a decision on our practices.

Thank You,

Kristy Chase
