Dear Colleagues, I'm doing a survey to find out how other libraries handle faxes. 1. Do you have self service? 2. Do you keep the fax machine behind the service area where only staff can process it? 3. Do you keep the fax machine in a public area and give patrons a choice of whether they want to do it themselves or get help with it? 4. Any other configurations of fax service? Thanks for your input! We have a small library and only get 2-3 requests for faxing per week. Thus it's not too time-consuming for our staff to handle it for our customers. Our machine is behind the circulation desk, essentially off limits to the public. Derek Barth Bath Township Library Center On Tue, Sep 27, 2016 at 3:25 PM, Jaema Berman <jberman@tln.lib.mi.us> wrote:

I know this has been tackled a number of times in this forum. Getting Fax24 is one of the best decisions our library ever made. It's in constant use and very easy to use. Jaema, #1 - no #2 - yes #3 - no #4 - no Hope this helps. We have enough trouble when the copier jams on patrons. I hate to think what would happen the first time a patron's paper was eaten by the fax. We are trained on how to fix jams and other strange happenings. Patrons are not. So we keep it under our control. Shelley On Tue, Sep 27, 2016 at 3:25 PM, Jaema Berman <jberman@tln.lib.mi.us> wrote:

1. N 2. Y 3. N 4. Other configurations - We are encouraging people to scan to e-mail their documents instead of faxing. It is a huge savings money wise for our patrons as we only charge the cost of a copy to do it (.20 cents per page). We have a large summer worker population and this has helped them tremendously. We still do the scanning but patrons input the email address that they want the document to go to. On Tue, Sep 27, 2016 at 10:38 PM, Shelley Williams <svbwilliams@gmail.com> wrote:

We do not have self-service, but it's something we've been looking in to. Frankly, given our experience with our self-serve copier, I'm not sure how much staff time self-serve would save. We keep the fax machine at the front desk and process faxes for patrons. $0.50/first page, $0.25/every page thereafter, no charge for the cover page, which we also offer free of charge. Fax service is heavily utilized by our community. Cynthia Stanczak Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. 1. We have a Simple Scan Station (http://www.simplescanstation.com/) in our adult public computer area that is theoretically self-serve. 2. We have a traditional fax machine in the staff office area for staff to use or if something were to happen and our Simple Scan was unable to be used. 3. We urge patrons to use the Simple Scan on their own and ask for help if it's required. I've found that most patrons will ask for help before attempting to use the public fax because they are confused by it or intimidated. 4. The Simple Scan really is very easy (and also scans to email, USB, and Google Docs), but it is rare that a patron doesn't need help using it. So in terms of staff time saved, maybe not a lot. 1. Yes (we use FAX24) 2. No (it's in the same room as our self-service copy machine, very close to the Circulation Desk) 3. We tell patrons that inquire about faxing that it is a self-service machine and give them basic directions but tell them that if they need help, they can see someone at the desk. If a patron insists on help before trying it, we will help. 4. For incoming faxes, patrons can have them sent to our staff machine for $1.00 a page. It's a relatively rare occurrence, and those that do it will call ahead so that we can look out for it and set it aside for them to pick up.
