free online astronomy program, March 28, How Does an Eclipse Happen?

Sorry to be so late posting this reminder. Started composing several times last week, but kept getting diverted to (virtual) fires. Ken Bertin has been sharing his love of astronomy since he was in grade school. This month he will show how an eclipse happens. This will help everyone start thinking about the total solar eclipse that should be visible from near Michigan next year. (This means that most of Michigan should be able to see a partial solar eclipse that day.) DPL is continuing our fruitful partnership with WSU's planetarium. Tuesday, March 28 6:00-7:30 p.m. Please register: https://dpl-eclipse-Syzygy.eventbrite.com [https://img.evbuc.com/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.evbuc.com%2Fimages%2F459598539%2F138776901512%2F1%2Foriginal.20230303-001346?w=1000&auto=format%2Ccompress&q=75&sharp=10&rect=0%2C33%2C1040%2C520&s=b03e232fc2ae601dc738a327c506ecff]<https://dpl-eclipse-syzygy.eventbrite.com/> How Does an Eclipse Happen?<https://dpl-eclipse-syzygy.eventbrite.com/> What happens when objects line up in Space? dpl-eclipse-syzygy.eventbrite.com The program will be recorded, and should be available on the Detroit Public Library YouTube channel within a few weeks. Thanks, Jennifer! Your program suggestion is the perfect opportunity for me to remind the entire listserv at large about the following SEAL trainings/solar glasses opportunity from our friends at STAR Net: SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries Two solar eclipses are coming to North America - an Annular Eclipse in 2023 and a Total Solar Eclipse in 2024 - and it's time for public library staff to get ready! Thanks to a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and a supplement to the NASA@My Library Project, the Space Science Institute's STAR Net team is providing 5 million solar viewing glasses, in-person training workshops, solar science circulation kits, print resources,~10,000 public libraries and 55 state library agencies across the nation. To learn more about the project, including how to register your library for free solar eclipse glasses, visit: www.starnetlibraries.org/about/our-projects/solar-eclipse-activities-libraries-seal/<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starnetlibraries.org%2Fabout%2Four-projects%2Fsolar-eclipse-activities-libraries-seal%2F&data=05%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C1867bf4dd9a74dee572808db1c18792f%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C638134663686799629%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=8iGeGpB0M3b4ZRwUBRG09ITGkMxBrjjDcVpU1p9m9aA%3D&reserved=0>. STAR Net is also offering 2 workshops in Michigan for public library staff! SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries with STAR Net These SEAL workshops will prepare and empower public library staff to facilitate meaningful solar and space science programs for their patrons that build curiosity, knowledge and inspiration. Attendees will receive hands-on training on operating solar telescopes and other methods for direct and indirect solar viewing, best practices for developing and facilitating STEM programs, and how to engage with community partners and library-specific digital resource networks. Attendees will also be able to sign up for free solar eclipse glasses to distribute to their communities in advance of both eclipses! STAR Net facilitators, bringing many years of experience building the STEM capacity of public library staff, will work with each state library to customize the workshop experience based on the needs and interests of public libraries within that state. Space is extremely limited, so register now for these FREE workshops with STAR Net: Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Flibraryofmichigan%2Fevent.jsp%3Fevent%3D2987%26&data=05%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C1867bf4dd9a74dee572808db1c18792f%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C638134663686799629%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=bNRR0d6YXGknwPK2c6uCdn4T6PB7KU2s6736g%2FS4gBM%3D&reserved=0> at the Delta Township District Library, 5130 Davenport Dr., Lansing, MI 48917 Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com%2Fnp%2Fclients%2Flibraryofmichigan%2Fevent.jsp%3Fevent%3D2992&data=05%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7C1867bf4dd9a74dee572808db1c18792f%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C638134663686799629%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=gdDbnLpoYt7CRbslQjV7RqBakpQfQe%2BfjnfIqmbGDl8%3D&reserved=0> at the Charlevoix Public Library, 220 Clinton St., Charlevoix Mi 49720 Lunch will be provided, however due to limited space we will be offering a waitlist.
