Post Corona Virus Clean-Up: Inquiring Boards Want to Know
My board passed the KDL-based Pandemic Policy, but asked a very pertinent question regarding what comes during and after a pandemic to the collections. How do you clean materials returned by those that have contracted the virus--and do we need to be proactive now and use some method of cleaning books or waiting? If we're being told to use our own pens to sign things, does that mean that slick book covers and DVDs might be a source of infection. From the reports I've read, some are saying the virus can live on these surfaces for up to 48 hours--and you cannot clean these items with bleach or spray cleaners. We don't need to know the patron's identity and if that information is included in the ILL paperwork, then couldn't we keep it confidential, like we do in other circumstances? Thanks, Rebecca PS- We set up a little cell phone cleaning station today (just rubbing alcohol mixed with water, cotton balls and Q-tips). I always do it after spring break to help the spread of any illnesses brought back but I think it's a good way to remind patrons that their phones need to be cleaned too. Speaking of panicking, if anyone is feeling anxious, afraid, etc., because of the coronavirus (or any reason), please don't hesitate to speak to someone about it. We're all in this together! In regard to the patron's privacy, it sounds like we will need to wipe down all items. I have a question about the inside of the items though (books, audio books, etc.). Depending on the book, you might not be able to wipe down the cover. We routinely wipe of all returning library books with bleach wipes. I believe these are effective against the corona virus, (according to this: https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2020-03/documents/sars-cov-2-list... ).
