Fax charges - sending/receiving
Curious what you all are charging for patron faxes (not interested in self-service fax machines, only fees for your staff to be involved in the faxing). Sending, per page - do you have a max fee/fax? Receiving, per page - do you have a max fee/fax? We are seeing quite a few courts document related faxes that are 20+ pages and the fee for those faxes seems out of line with the amount of work our staff are putting into the sending of them. We're looking at adding a max fee/fax and I'm curious as to what other libraries are doing regarding fees for this service. Many thanks! Hi, To Send, we charge $1 per fax number, it does not matter if it is one or 20 pages. This doesn't matter what the content is nor how much staff time involved. To receive, we charge .10 cents per page coming in. Hi Andrea, We don't charge at all for faxes. We're a small library and don't get a ton of fax requests. We have internet faxing so it doesn't cost us anything except staff time and that is minimal. We also have not ever received an incoming fax since we just got faxing ability about a year and a half ago, but if that becomes an issue, I would probably charge 10 cents/page for black & white, 50 cents for color, same as our copy/print pricing. So many great responses! To clarify the max is from a fee perspective (ex: $1/page with a max fee of $10) and not # of pages sent/received. I'm not sure my email was quite clear in that regard ;) I will summarize responses for the list. Thanks again! Our normal fee schedule is $1/per page with max fee of $10 per fax, with no charge for the cover sheet to send. To receive, we charge $.25 per page. However, we did have a generous donor pre-pay for some of our services, including faxes, so the individual patron is not currently being charged. We are just tracking numbers to know when we reach the end of the donation. Thanks! Marie Tsuji Delton District Library 330 N. Hi, Andrea: We charge $0.15/page for sending with no limit. I've empowered my staff to waive the fees if it's for court/state filings, employment, or medical. Interestingly, people are so happy we're providing the service at that rate, so they just gratefully pay for it anyhow. We do not receive faxes for patrons, so we don't charge for that. *Glenn Fischer, MSI <https://www.si.umich.edu/programs/master-science-information> (he/him)Library Director* | gfischer@dewittlibrary.org Phone: 517-668-7081 | dewittlibrary.org On Mon, Nov 17, 2025 at 8:17 AM Andrea Ingmire via Michlib-l < michlib-l@liblists.org> wrote:

Hi Andrea, Better late than never! Van Buren District Library charges .15 cents per page, both sending and receiving. The staff are the ones who process the faxes on behalf of the patrons. .15 per page was a recent price reduction to bring it inline with our copying fees. We offer faxing as a service and it’s not intended to be a money maker. Most people who send faxes are not people of means and they only need to send a sheet or two, though every now and again we’ll have a patron who needs to send a voluminous fax. For the most part our patrons don’t experience the need to receive faxes, only to send them. Until this past June we charged the following: A. Cover sheet when sent with regular pages ................................. $0.00 B. First 10 sheets sent cost per page.................................................. $0.50 C. Each additional sheet after the first 10 pages.............................. $1.00 D. Each sheet receiving B & W............................................................ $0.15 E. Each sheet receiving color (if available)....................................... $0.40 Earlier in the year the staff lobbied me to bring the faxing fees inline with our copying fees, because, as previously stated, most in need of fax service are not people of means. I agreed with them and brought it to the Library Board, which amended our policy.
