Hi! I have a quick question for the group: how long do your library cards stay active and valid before you require the patron to renew them? Or maybe you don’t even have an expiration date? Thanks!! At Southfield our cards expire annually on the card holders birthday. This is problematic with patrons as it’s a hassle. We installed the process because we have a highly mobile population and items were being lost. Dave Dave Ewick

Our cards expire one year from their previous renewal (not any any particular day). We used to have them expire every 3 years, but we found we too often had out of date contact information. In general, we encourage patrons to renew in September during Library Card Sign-up Month and we sweeten the pot with a drawing for a gift card or basket with entry for anyone who signs up for a card or renews their card that month. In normal times, it was a popular and successful effort. Cynthia Stanczak, MLS (she/her) Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. The cards for patrons who are within our district don't expire, per se. We do have them set to flip over to "Inactive" status after 3 years of non-use. Then if they return, we get their updated information. For non-residents, the card expires one year from when it was entered into the system, and they have to pay the small fee to have it reinstated. Ours in Ann Arbor are 2 years for residents, 1 year for non-residents and business cards. During the pandemic, we've been renewing everyone for 3 months at a time (like currently the expiration date is May 1st but closer to May 1st, they'll probably make it August 1st). ------------------ Valerie Long, MLIS Acquisitions Clerk Ann Arbor District Library longv@aadl.org / 734-327-4286 Pronouns: They/Them/Theirs ----- Original Message ----- From: "michlib-l" <michlib-l@mcls.org> To: "michlib-l" <michlib-l@mcls.org> Sent: Thursday, March 11, 2021 9:08:46 AM Subject: [Michlib-l] Library Card Expiration Hi! Hello again, I received 42 replies to my question from a variety of library classes. The results were: Regular Resident Cards Expire After… … 1 year: 9 libraries … 2 years: 8 libraries … 3 years: 23 libraries … 5 years: 1 library … no expiration, if active: 1 library Most who do 1 year voice their rationale: patrons’ rapidly changing contact information. To add BDL to the above totals, this is the same reason we switched from 3 years to 1 year a number of years ago. A couple libraries who are at 3 years said they used to be at 1 year, but found that schedule to be onerous for patrons and/or staff. I have a trustee inquiring about that, hence my question to you all. Thanks to all who replied today! Best, John John Rucker, Director Branch District Library 10 E.
