Questions about policies regarding Snow days, jury duty and other days off

1. What do other libraries do regarding Snow Days and hourly employee pay? If they are scheduled to work and the library closes due to snow, do they get paid? 2. Other acts of God, so to speak, like power outages, etc... Do the hourly employees get paid for their regularly scheduled time? 3. Jury Duty- our current policy states the following: If a salaried employee is called for Jury Duty, the employee's regular pay shall be maintained by the library for a period of, but not to exceed 5 working days. Salaried employees are required to reimburse the library for the jury pay received (Excluding travel reimbursements) while regular pay is maintained. Jury duty beyond 5 days required a leave of absence without pay. Hourly employees will not receive compensation from the library for jury duty. So, my question is how do other libraries treat jury duty and employee pay? Current jury duty pay in the state is a measly $30 a day for the first 5 days and $45 afterwards. Since my hourly employees make more than $15 an hour, they will be losing money. Doesn't seem fair. Bridgeport Public Library here (near Saginaw). 1 & 2 - if you're scheduled to work, and the library closes (for snow, weather, facility issues, acts of god etc), you get paid. Doesn't matter what. 3. This is our policy for jury duty (applies to all staff, salary & hourly): An employee who is called to serve and does serve on jury duty will be provided with an approved paid leave for the duration of the jury service. The employee must give the Library prior notice that they have been summoned for jury duty. So they would get paid their normal hourly rate for whatever scheduled time they missed. Hope this helps! Peninsula Community Library has the same policy for jury duty and snow days as Amber Hughey's If you are on the schedule, you are paid your regular rate. On Thu, Feb 6, 2025 at 2:30 PM Amber Hughey via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

Living in the UP and having a large geographic area (2,300 sq miles) the weather can be intense and can vary greatly between locations. If we have to close for weather, it is done in a location-by-location determination, meaning even if we close on Drummond Island, we may be open at the seven other libraries in the district. Our policy is that if people are scheduled to work, and we have to close the library for any reason (weather, power outage, etc) everyone scheduled to work that day gets paid their usual pay, and they do not have to use any of their PTO hours. We also pay for jury duty. Same here at Albion. Only change to the jury duty is that staff can choose to take leave and receive their allotted jury pay during the time of their service, or they can be paid their normal rate for the time and sign the jury payment back over to the library. Same as we do for workers compensation payments - one or the other source of payment, not both. Cynthia Stanczak, MLS (she/her) Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. Huntington Woods library - near Detroit Zoo: Part-time employees do not receive any pay for closing early or for closing before their scheduled shift begins. So even if they are working and we close in the middle of their shift, they are paid only until they go home. I don't know what our jury duty policy is. I was called last summer, but never had to serve so I didn't bother looking into ti.
