Good Morning Everyone! Could fellow librarians tell me how they are planning their holiday closings for this Christmas and New Year's? Christmas and New Year's fall on a Sunday this season. Do you observe Monday as the holiday(s)? Also how long are you closed for this holiday break? Thank you, Jane Himmel Library Director Pigeon District Library

Hi all-- Lapeer District Library locations could be closed Dec 23 - 26 and Dec 30-Jan 2 as staff policy dictates that there are two holiday days: the Eve and the Day. Dec 23 covers the Saturday 24th, and the 26th covers the Sunday 25th. Ditto for that following weekend. HOWEVER--I am going to ask our part-timers and subs if they'd like to keep the library open on the 23rd and the 30th. Only three locations are open on Friday, and as it's a 9-5 day, only one shift would be needed for each branch. Our administrative office would be closed for the full four days. melissa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Himmel" <pdl1@mail.pigeondistrictlibrary.com> To: michlib-l@mcls.org Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2016 9:34:32 AM Subject: [Michlib-l] Holiday Closings Good Morning Everyone! I guess it just really surprises me that other libraries don't have this figured out before the year has started. I've worked at many public libraries and they've all had their holiday closing schedules set and posted on line by the beginning of the year...and a policy in place for when this perfect storm of the holidays falling on a weekend happens. Remember what you do this year...it's going to happen again in 2022! -- Ben Sebrowski Director of Technology Charter Township of Commerce 2009 Township Drive Commerce Township, MI 48390 Ph (248)960-7037 On Thu, Oct 13, 2016 at 6:03 PM, Melissa Malcolm <melissa@lib.lapeer.org> wrote:

It really is a perfect storm of holidays this year. Our full-time and part-time staff have 2 paid holidays in November (1 floater for Veterans Day), 3 paid holidays in December (3 floaters), and 2 paid holidays in January (1 floater + MLK, Jr Day). Here's our policy, which we've slowly been refining over the last few years. *Holiday Pay* Holiday pay is compensation paid to regular full-time and regular part-time employees for time during which work would normally be performed, the work having been suspended by reason of a general holiday. The Albion District Library recognizes the following holidays: New Year's Day Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Presidents Day Easter Floating Holiday Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Eve Christmas Day New Year's Eve Regular part-time and full-time employees shall be paid for observed holidays which fall on days for which they would have been scheduled to work, and will be compensated the number of hours for which they are scheduled to work on that day. Should a paid holiday fall on a day when Albion District Library is otherwise closed (i.e., Friday or Sunday), regular full-time and part-time employees may request one regularly scheduled day of holiday leave within the calendar month of said holiday. Should a paid holiday fall on a Saturday, full-time and part-time employees not otherwise regularly scheduled for that day may request one regularly scheduled day of holiday leave within the calendar month of said holiday. Those part-time employees regularly scheduled to work on a Saturday will receive holiday pay for those hours not worked due to the Library closing for that day. The Director will coordinate holiday leave requests so that service to the public is not interrupted. Holiday pay will not be granted in a pay period if creating a situation of overtime hours. An employee who is scheduled or who agrees to work on one of the designated holidays shall take another day off during the calendar month. Holidays occurring during an employee's vacation period, bereavement leave, sick leave, or other approved leave periods are compensable as holidays. Holidays occurring during layoff, leave of absence, or suspension are not compensable. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions on our policy. This year, we close on Dec. 23rd, 24th, 26th for Christmas and December 31st for New Year's Eve and Jan. 2, 2017 for New Year's. Our policy says that if a holiday falls on a day we are normally closed, we will be closed on an adjacent business day. (We are normally closed on Sundays). Since the Holiday is falling on a Saturday and Sunday, we will NOT be closed any other additional days. Our library will be closed on Dec 24, 25, 31st and January 1st only. No extra time off or paid holiday since it falls on the weekend. Nannette Pretzer Director St. Charles District Library 104 W.
