Great Michigan Read: free books, GMR Action Grants, and upcoming events
Good afternoon, Michigan libraries! If you aren't already registered as a Great Michigan Read<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/great-michigan-read/> (GMR) partner, there's still time. We still have copies of Curtis Chin's Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant available, as well as our supplementary materials. Additionally, as a registered partner, you're eligible for up to $750 in Great Michigan Read Action Grant funding. Limited grants are still available. Please save the date and spread the word about these GMR Action Grant-funded author events taking place in the weeks ahead: * Ann Arbor District Library this Friday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m. Curtis Chin will be part of an event co-hosted by the LGBTQ+ History Association and Ann Arbor District Library. "Historical Perspectives on Queer Detroit"<https://aadl.org/node/668602> will feature Curtis reading from his memoir, Mix Mann presenting research on the life of the Detroit-based Black lesbian activist Ruth Ellis, and Tim Retzloff reading from Come Out! In Detroit, a non-fiction comic book he co-created to tell the story of Michigan's first Pride celebration held in 1972. * Detroit on Saturday, July 25, from 12 to 8 p.m.: Detroit Chinatown Block Party<https://detroitchinatownvisioncommittee.org/block-party> This free and family-friendly event will feature a dynamic lineup of live DJs, cultural performances, and interactive activities designed to educate and engage attendees about the legacy and future of Detroit's Chinatown.
