Good afternoon, Michigan libraries!
If you aren’t already registered as a Great Michigan Read
(GMR) partner, there’s still time. We still have copies of Curtis Chin’s Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant
available, as well as our supplementary materials.
Additionally, as a registered partner, you’re eligible for up to $750 in Great Michigan Read Action Grant funding. Limited grants are still available.
Please save the date and spread the word about these GMR Action Grant-funded author events taking place in the weeks ahead:
- Ann Arbor District Library this Friday, June 5, at 1:30 p.m.
Curtis Chin will be part of an event co-hosted by the LGBTQ+ History Association and Ann Arbor District Library.
"Historical Perspectives on Queer Detroit"
will feature Curtis reading from his memoir, Mix Mann presenting research on the life of the Detroit-based Black lesbian activist Ruth Ellis, and Tim Retzloff reading from Come Out! In Detroit, a non-fiction comic book he co-created to tell the story of Michigan’s
first Pride celebration held in 1972.
- Detroit on Saturday, July 25, from 12 to 8 p.m.:
Detroit Chinatown Block Party
This free and family-friendly event will feature a dynamic lineup of live DJs, cultural performances, and interactive activities designed to educate and engage attendees about the legacy and future of Detroit’s Chinatown. Haven't had a chance to see Curtis
Chin yet? Come to the Block Party for his reading and conversation, and to learn more about Detroit Chinatown history.
- Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights, July 28, 7 p.m.
See Curtis in conversation and for a book signing at the Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights.
If you are interested in becoming a partner, please contact me and I will help you get registered!
