Good Morning, I have been a notary for many years and find it a valuable service to provide for patrons. It is by appointment only, but if I am available for a walk-in, I will take them. You will need a notary bond from your insurance company, then fill out the form (https://www.michigan.gov/sos/all-services/notary-application - don't sign it) and take it to your county clerk's office to be sworn in ($10), then mail the form and a check to the Office of the Great Seal of Michigan to become official. You will also want to order a log book and stamp (there are lots of companies out there for this), a seal is optional in Michigan. Here is our policy: https://www.brandonlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Notary-Service-pol... I'm happy to answer any questions, Good luck, Laura Laura Fromwiller, Director Brandon Township Public Library (248) 627-1474 On Fri, Nov 10, 2023 at 10:34 AM Susan Wess via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

I have been a Notary since 2018 as a service the library provides for free. Since it is free we do have a few limitations. Such as the number i can do at one time, and it is based on my availability. It wasn't difficult or cost prohibitive. It does help that the location for me to be sworn in is a block away from my library. The training was online. I would get a seal stamp and a record book. (a Lot of forms ask for a seal stamp) Policy: https://www.loutitlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Notary-Service-Poli... I am also a notary and as previously mentioned by Allison and Laura, we have set guidelines and limitations which I have attached below. I do not notarize everything, not because I cannot legally but because patrons requesting certain items to be notarized often press for the answering of questions that border on legal advice which I cannot give. I am bonded through the insurance company that carries liability for the library, staff and board. On Mon, Nov 13, 2023 at 9:28 AM Allison Boyer via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

Thanks all- great info. We have been considering this too! On Fri, Nov 10, 2023 at 11:31 AM Library Director via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:
Hello Cierra,
I received funding from the The State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) through the Legal Self-Help Centers Grant Program. We have a Self-Help kiosk at our library, and expanded our services for the Self-Help Center. Part of the grant funding we received covered expanding our notary services. The grant was able to pay for the bond needed for having a staff member become a notary as well as mileage for her going to the courts, and notary supplies. Since we were expanding our services through the grant and Michigan Legal Help emphasizes providing service to little to no cost for patrons, we do not charge for notary services. Patrons wishing for notary services must have their IDs ready for the notary to confirm the identification of the signer.
So far it has worked out for us. Also, SCAO has the same grant available for next year. While the applications must be turned in by November 12th, it might be worth putting in an application if you already have a center and wish to add on a notary.
Good luck,
