
TITLE: Building Monitor FSLA STATUS: Non-Exempt SCHEDULE: Part-time, 10 to 15 hours weekly, may include evenings & weekends REPORTS TO: Branch Manager DEADLINE TO APPLY: August 18, 2023 STARTING SALARY: $15/hour Branch Assignment: Woods SUMMARY The Grosse Pointe Public Library is seeking a professional and proactive Building Monitor. This position is responsible for engaging with youth and adults at the library in order to maintain an environment conducive to library use and enjoyment with an emphasis on positive interactions. The Grosse Pointe Public Library is a Class 6 Library, with a service population of 52,000+ people and three branches. There is strong community support for the Library and its collections, services and programs offered. Technology is integrated into library services. The successful candidates will have the desire to work in a collaborative, team environment and take pride in providing prompt and friendly service to customers of all ages, and have a passion for serving the community. The following Core Values are the foundation for day-to-day operations, management, and leadership of the Grosse Pointe Public Library: Service Access to Information & Resources Intellectual Curiosity Respect Inclusion Innovation Kindness JOB RESPONSIBILITIES * Build rapport and relationships with youth and adults in the library to promote a safe environment and engagement with library resources * Move throughout library during shift, monitoring the building for security and patron safety concerns * Ensure code of conduct policy is carried out fairly and consistently * Assist in difficult patron-staff interactions, preventing potential conflicts from escalating and resolving disruptive behavior through proactive patron engagement and dialogue * File incident reports when necessary * Escort persons asked to leave the building to the door to ensure they exit * Work with other staff to support positive youth engagement in the branch * Assist library patrons with basic information regarding library policies, organization, locations, services and facilities * Utilize computer applications and library equipment, maintaining current knowledge of procedures, processes, policies and operations * Verify building security at closing * Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS * Flexible, friendly and able to establish rapport with patrons and staff * Demonstrates strong verbal communication skills with the ability to proactively defuse and deescalate situations * Must demonstrate a willingness to listen and work through complaints from the public and difficult situations in a calm and diplomatic manner * Ability to exercise sound judgment in the execution of job responsibilities, often with minimal supervision * Demonstrated ability to interact with members of diverse communities in a respectful, tactful, patient and professional manner that reflects the Library's core values * Demonstrates strong written communication skills and the ability to prepare meaningful, concise and accurate reports * Seeks, accepts and incorporates feedback and direction * Experience working with middle and high school students * Strong attention to detail; dependable and flexible work habits * Able to lift, push or pull 50 pounds * Able to visually review materials and discern voice and audible tones * Able to stand or move around the building for 90% of work shift * High school diploma or equivalent The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned this classification.
