[Michlib-l] guess the book

I had a patron come in recently looking for a title that he read "a really long time ago." My hints were: -main character/narrator is male -during/after WWII -set in Africa -elephant whose name means "plows the earth" -main character killed by elephant at the end I've been researching and unable to find anything that seems to fit so far.
