I had a patron come in recently looking for a title that he read “a really long time ago.” My hints were:

-main character/narrator is male

-during/after WWII

-set in Africa

-elephant whose name means “plows the earth”

-main character killed by elephant at the end

I’ve been researching and unable to find anything that seems to fit so far. My patron knows it’s a long shot to find it based on what he remembers, but I’d still like to give it my best shot. J
