Perhaps one of Dan Gutman's books. We think of him as a sports story writer, but he has written some historical books. One series is called Flashback Four where a photographer and 4 kids go back in time to take pictures of historic events. Another is the QWERTY Stevens short series, two or 3 books that take the reader back in time with historic people.
