Summer Reading: how to count unpublished stories

Hi all; In an attempt to keep our patrons (especially teens) into reading this summer, we are allowing all formats of reading (books, magazines, ebooks, audiobooks, etc.). Because we are allowing so many different formats to be used, we chose to go with page counts for all ages (seems to be the fairest way to track). For online ebooks and audiobooks, we typically use the standard hardcover page count for those titles. One of my teen patrons asked if they could count a book they are reading online that is from a site for writers to "self publish". Since these titles do not have a page count available, any suggestions as to how we can count these stories? I don't want to tell our readers that they can't use these titles - the whole point of summer reading is to get kids/teens/adults reading for the fun of it. Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Laura Orlowski, director Camden Twp. Library camden@monroe.lib.mi.us

I have our teens report how many hours they read. That way slower readers can compete with faster readers and manga readers don't get any more credit than someone reading Dante's Inferno. This also helps with the online fan fiction and original self published titles, a huge source of reading for the teens at my library. According to http://www.megcabot.com/about-meg-cabot/frequently-asked-questions-getting-p... , "How many words are there to a page? It depends on the font you are using, of course, but in general, 250-300 words per page. Therefore, a 55,000 word book should be about 200 manuscript pages. A 100,000 word book would be about 400. Editors like 12 point font." So, you could have them do a quick word count (easy to do by pasting in Microsoft Word) and count one page for every 250 words. ~Jocelyn Levin, MLIS Jocelyn (Baldwin) Levin, MLIS jmb.mlis@gmail.com On Fri, Jun 17, 2016 at 12:08 PM, Linda Smith <lsmith@tadl.org> wrote:
