Dear Librarians, Our board is working on a complete and revised employee handbook. We are trying to rule on employee cell phone use. How does your library handle employee cell phone use? Thanks for your input.. Stephanie Daniels, Director Hartford Public Library

Stephanie, Please clarify for us - are you looking at guidelines for use of a library owned cell phone that is issued to staff - or for use of a personal cell phone while "on duty" ? Stephanie, We don't have a policy. I will say that we have many mothers with children from infant to teen who rely on their cell phone to stay in touch. They are much *less* distracted by picking up phone and reading 'at friends house' than they would be if they were worried about their child. We have had employees who would have probably had to resign if it weren't for the easy access they had with sick loved ones at home thanks to frequent calls and texts. And it cuts both ways. Those same people who use valuable 'on clock' time checking texts from family also check emails and texts at home- and reply- even though they are off clock. Home these thoughts help you craft a sensible policy. It won't be easy! NS On Tuesday, July 2, 2013, stephanie daniels wrote:

I allow my employees full access to their own cell phones, no policy. I completely agree with Nancy. Julie Sent from my iPhone On Jul 2, 2013, at 8:15 AM, stephanie daniels <daniels55@yahoo.com> wrote:

Speaking as a reference librarian, I carry my Samsung Galaxy Note II phablet with me while working the desk and even made a sling for it, since I don't have pockets. I use it to show patrons how to access ebooks and apps for library databases, as well as to take notes, exchange information with patrons, snap photos for our library twitter account and etc. Today's "phones" do so much more and I consider mine to be one of the best tools I have at my disposal. Our library does a lot of social media, so all of our librarians are facebook, twitter, chat and blog active while on desk. It's just part of who we are as professionals. I have our library chat function enabled on my phone as well, so I frequently check my work email and make myself available to staff via chat even when away from my own desk. I do use my personal cell phone for work. For example, I use my cell phone to make sure that our wireless service is working correctly when helping troubleshoot patron computer problems and to show patrons how to use the e-book app for android. I even have used it to place holds/look up books for patrons when the internet and/or the computers were down. I have taken pictures at programs and events where I forgot the library camera or its batteries went dead. So while I agree that limiting the use of cell phones for personal use while working is a good idea, I would not forbid them altogether. This is just my opinion. I hope this helps. In addition to the other legitimate uses for a personal cell phone while at work, I have used mine when a fiber optic cable was cut. No internet equaled no phone in that library. We were unable to communicate with our branches to let them know what had happened. Because we had our cell phones we were able to let the branches know what was happening and to allow them to communicate with us. We do not allow our pages (all high school students) to carry their cell phones while working. We have caught too many hidden in corners texting. We tell them to have their parents call the library directly in case of emergency. Celia Celia Morse, Library Director Berkley Public Library 3155 Coolidge Hwy.
