I hope you are doing well. Would you like to actively contribute to increasing diversity and inclusion in libraries? The BIPOC Become Librarians project provides that opportunity. Funded by the Laura Bush 21st Century Library Program from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), this project introduces undergraduate students who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) to careers in library and information science by having them meet one-on-one with mentors working in the field. Our library, San José State University’s School of Information, and the San José Public Library have collaborated to establish this project. We are looking for librarians/library professionals like you who are interested in mentoring BIPOC undergraduate students as they explore the field of LIS. Interactions will be via Zoom or in a hybrid format. The mentorship program will begin in August 2023 and conclude in June 2024. The expected time commitment is 2-3 hours per month. There will also be a training session in early- to mid-February 2023 led by Dr. Jerome Offord, Associate University Librarian for Antiracism at Harvard University. You will find the Mentor Interest Form on our website: https://library.sjsu.edu/bbl We appreciate your consideration in getting involved in our project and completing the form by January 15, 2023. We also welcome you sharing this opportunity with other colleagues who may be interested too! Please contact me if you have questions/comments.
