Do any of you have a procedure in place for when someone enters the library with a gun -(in a non-threatening way, of course!) ? I've been told quite a few years ago to call 911 and have the police come to check permits and such. This certainly doesn't sound like the best, least inflammatory way to handle it, but I don't know of something better. We had our first open carry a few weeks ago. We have local law enforcement numbers at the desk. Our Chief of Police asked to be called even though it might be a non threatening case. Told us to call 911 only if the subject is combative and or brandishing the weapon. Once the weapon is unholstered you should call 911. Hope this helps. Perri Saunders, No doubt there will be those who disagree, but our staff has been instructed to call the police (in our case "dispatch" as opposed to 911), describe the situation and then ask that an officer stop by to check out the person. That's not a violation of his/her "rights," in my opinion. You're simply trying to make certain your library provides a safe environ- ment for all. Non gun-toters have "rights," too. Manchester District Library reflects White Lake's policy as well. We did have an older gentleman who would come in with a side arm. Our police department was notified and spoke with him. Not sure what was said, but he does not bring his gun in any longer. When we call 911, we were told to tell dispatch it was a non-emergency call, and then tell them what the situation is. Good luck. Hate guns in the library. Kathy On Tue, Apr 19, 2016 at 4:05 PM, David Conklin <dconklin@thegdl.org> wrote:
