*Library Director – Irving Public Library (TX)*
The City of Irving (Texas) Public Library <https://cityofirving.org/1054/Library> seeks a new Library Director – someone ready to work and succeed with this incredible opportunity. With three library locations (two new since 2011) and one learning center, a staff of 104, and a $7 million annual budget, the successful candidate will work closely with external and internal stakeholders to shape a new library vision. The director will focus on a new library strategic plan and aligning the library to the community’s needs for future library services and programs. Key opportunities include developing and implementing strategic goals, enhancing public access to new technologies, mentoring and coaching staff by creating staff development opportunities, and seeking new service delivery models. The library has excellent support from the Library Advisory Board, the Friends of the Library, and the City of Irving.
Irving, Texas is centrally located between Dallas and Fort Worth and is home to more than 256,684 residents. The city’s thriving economy, combined with its proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field airports, has made Irving a corporate powerhouse and an exciting place to live. The city’s rich diversity is not only exhibited by its population or number of languages spoken by residents, but by the makeup of its business community. Irving is home to more than 8,500 local and multinational companies including four Fortune 1000 companies and eight Fortune 500 companies, which operate global headquarters in Irving. Approximately 70 percent of Irving’s tax base is derived from commercial property and business activity, and the city’s daytime population surpasses 300,000 throughout the week.
Irving’s state-of-the-art transportation opportunities include two large airports, light and heavy rail, public bus services, as well as several major highways providing easy access to North Texas and beyond. Employment opportunities abound. In the last fiscal year, Irving saw 2,100 new jobs; 3,100 retained jobs; $306M in capital investment, and 13 corporate headquarters relocated to Irving. In recognition of its strength, Irving has been recognized as a top 10 Best City to Start a Career and Hardest Working City in America by WalletHub. Irving was recognized for being the second-most culturally diverse city in the U.S. by the Dallas Morning News in 2021, and Forbes listed Irving as the No. 1 Best City of Jobs in 2017. Irving offers the world-class Irving Arts Center that hosts live theater, ballet, and symphony performances, as well as national and local art exhibits. The Toyota Music Factory offers an 8,000-seat music hall that includes a 4,000-seat amphitheater and numerous dining and retail opportunities.
While Irving is in the center of a large metropolitan area, its beautiful green spaces — including exceptional golf courses and more than 80 parks on 1,868 park acres — beg for outdoor activity. Irving’s Campion Trail offers exceptional golf courses, outdoor sporting facilities, and more than 15 miles of walkable, bikeable trail. Irving is the first city to share a major connection along the Trinity Trail System, a regional network that will ultimately span 250 miles and connect 16 counties across North Texas. The City of Irving is also home to six full-time recreation centers that offer a variety of indoor sports and children’s programs, six aquatic centers, a dog park, lighted tennis courts, a youth activity center, and a senior activity center. Of Irving’s 67.9 square miles of land area, more than 23-square miles are dedicated to master-planned developments and districts. These well-designed developments include Dallas Communications Complex, DFW Freeport, Freeport Center, Heritage Crossing District, Las Colinas, Valley Ranch, and multiple retail centers. Irving has more than 100 shopping centers and more than 500 restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Residents are well served through the community’s health care systems and educational opportunities abound. The city boasts four museums providing a variety of educational and cultural pursuits. Residents are served by Irving, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, and Coppell school districts, as well as a variety of private and parochial schools and academies. On *Tuesday, March 22, at 7:00 pm* EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host award-winning children’s author Carole Lindstrom. Lindstrom, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe, will speak about her acclaimed 2020 book, *We Are Water Protectors*. She wrote the book, illustrated by Michaela Goade (member of the Tlingit and Haida Tribes), in response to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests at Standing Rock that started in 2016. The book “issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguarding the Earth’s water from harm and corruption.” In recognition of their work, the book was awarded the 2021 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award in the Books for Younger Children category and the 2021 Caldecott Medal. This is the first book authored and illustrated by members of Tribal communities to win the Caldecott Medal.
This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University’s videoconferencing tool, Webex. Registration is required for the event and the shortened link to register is: https://tinyurl.com/ClarkeCaroleLindstrom .
