Book Spine Bookmarks - Help!

Hi library world, I saw a craft I wanted to try, and scheduled it thinking it would be a breeze. Now, three book spines later, I still have not been able to make this craft work. I was attempting to make a cool bookmark from a book spine. Have any of you crafty librarians out there tried this craft? Do you have any tips or tricks you can share with me to make it work? OR, on the other hand, do you have anything similar - a book inspired bookmark of sorts - that may be a simpler craft that I could easily create instead? This craft isn't for a couple months, so I still have time to freak out...I mean, plan and prepare...haha. But, any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Hi all, Here is a video similar to what I am trying to make: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT29b-Yw0zE&t=118s The issue I am having is the spine just does not look good after I cut it off the book and do the gluing portion - I tried adding cardstock but that made it appear even worse.
