Christensen, Library Director Application Deadline: Saturday, September 7, 2013 by 5:00 p.m. Salary Range: $ 19.48-$21.33 per hour Hours of Work: Average of 39 hours per week. Evening and weekend hours required. Representation: AFSCME Employee Summary of Position: This Department Head position is responsible for directing, planning and implementing all activities related to youth ages 0-18 years of age. Position Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited school. At least 2 years, previous public library experience. Extensive experience in developing, planning and implementing programming for all ages, especially those 0-18 years. Knowledge of literature for children and teens and other library materials and resources. Demonstrated organizational skills. Desire to meet and serve the public, especially youth, families and educators. Knowledge of public library services appropriate for youth. Knowledge of publicity and promotion techniques and materials. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge of automated library systems and range of Internet skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Position Responsibilities: Plans and coordinates all PWPL programming for children and teens. Coordinates the development and implementation of library displays, exhibits, activities, bibliographies, programs, publicity and promotion for children and teens. Assures that at all times patrons are being provided with quality service to meet their needs. Develops selection criteria and collection development strategies for materials acquisitions. Reviews, selects and acquires all print and non-print materials for youth 0-18 years of age. The process includes review of patron requests and an evaluation and assessment of existing collections. Participates in budget preparation by submitting planned expenditures for youth services department for the coming fiscal year, and monitors and maintains budgetary guidelines during the year. Compiles library activity reports and statistics relating to youth services and submits as directed. Assumes responsibility for resolving problem areas within Youth Services Department and keeps supervisor apprised of action taken. Makes recommendations for improvement or changes with regard to library policies and operations. Interviews, hires and supervises all positions in the Youth Services Department. Provides training to all persons who report directly to the position and plans a professional development program for each staff member. Plans, coordinates and implements all in-service training for youth services department staff. Responsible for evaluations and necessary counseling of all staff members of the Youth Services Department who report directly to position. Plans and coordinates all PWPL educational programming that relates to the Youth Services Department conducted for staff, community, special interest groups and patrons. Plans and coordinates all library tours and library instruction for Youth Services Department patrons. Participates in the planning and implementation of library objectives and services. Maintains confidentiality of library records and administrative matters. Monitors trends and new methods of service delivery by reviewing professional materials and publications. Participates in continuing education and training to assure maintenance of current information. Serves on committees appropriate to position. Cultivates and maintains working relationships with a variety of community organizations. Interacts and works effectively with patrons, supervisors, co-workers, staff and volunteers. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Library Director.
