Determining Residency and Millages for Public Library Cards

Hello everyone, In the past, my library has used American Factfinder <https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml> to help determine where millages are paid and how classifications for residency are determined for our library cards. We were basically able to punch in an applying patron’s address into the system <https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/searchresults.xhtml?refresh=t> and based on the Economic Place results, we were able to easily determine the classification. However, American Factfinder is going offline on March 31st and we are having some issues with navigating the Census Data website thus far. As I am waiting to hear a reply from the Census Data website of whether this feature will be part of the migration or going obsolete, we are exploring other options, such as working with Google Maps. Nothing is showing the ease of access we are hoping for thus far. Would anyone mind sharing their foolproof go to for determining residency and where mileages are paid? Thanks in advance for your help and advice. -- Adrianne M. Hey there! Jocelyn, this is super helpful! I will definitely use this to see what municipality an address is in! I wonder, if anyone knows a good one for school districts? I feel like some library districts are made up of combinations of municipalities, some have boundaries coterminous with school districts, some have combinations of both! Hi Jocelyn and Shoshana, In Dexter, we use the Washtenaw County parcel lookup at Washtenaw.org>>services>>Property/Parcel Lookup. This diverts the viewer off to an older site at https://secure3.ewashtenaw.org/ecommerce/property/pStart.do This has been helpful for us because each individual parcel lists the school district where taxes are paid. Our boundaries are the same as the Dexter School District, so it makes it easy to determine if someone is inside or outside our boundary. We also use a similar service through Livingston County as we overlap counties. https://www.bsaonline.com/?uid=2015 Washtenaw and Livingston both provide this service for free. Many municipalities use the BS&A service and these records will show school district and municipality. The Village of Vicksburg provides access here https://bsaonline.com/?uid=2081 I'm not sure how big your service area is, so you might need to investigate whether your surrounding townships provide this separately. I looked up Prevos Family Markets at 137 N Main in Vicksburg. It looks like Vicksburg charges for look-ups. There is an account set-up option and option 1 on the result said the service was free to homeowners and current residents. Kalamazoo County looks like it provides the service free at https://bsaonline.com/?uid=405 and also showed the Prevos entry in Vicksburg, but it looks like the County provides less information that other municipalities. They show total taxes paid, but not detailed parcel information, like school district. You might be able to get a free log on from the county that would provide more information. Hope this helps, Paul Paul McCann Dexter District Library Library Director 3255 Alpine St. Phone: 734-426-4477 Dexter, MI 48130 Fax: 734-426-1217 www.dexter.lib.mi.us On 2/13/2020 6:15 PM, Shoshanna Wechter via Michlib-l wrote:

Dear Michlib, We recently hosted Callie Corsa at our library for a class on beginning calligraphy, more specifically brush pen calligraphy. She has been doing calligraphy for over 5 years and has her own business ( I cannot remember how I found her!). She brought all of the supplies, including handouts, and our attendees really enjoyed the class- they asked for more! Callie covered the beginning brush strokes that make up lower-case letters and we did a lot of practice on the paper pads she handed out. We ran out of time to do what I originally asked Callie to do, which was teach calligraphy for creating Valentine's day cards. But everyone was very satisfied with just the beginning portion of it and didn't mind that we didn't get to the cards. Next time, we may plan a series with Callie that includes: one class for the intro, another class for upper-case letters, and maybe another class for creative designs. I did have to limit the class size to ten attendees due to budgetary reasons. The only negative feedback we had was that we were pressed for time and Callie did rush a bit. We scheduled an hour and a half, so I'd recommend about two hours or so, with a little room for even going over that. But other than that, everyone was happy and asked for another class. Here is her contact info if you are interested: "Callie Corsa" <cacorsa@gmail.com> Happy Monday! Katie Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Outreach Librarian Lyon Township Public Library 27005 S. Hi, One of our awesome librarians found this path to information - most importantly a clear listing of the township for the patron, which is the information we used the most from American Fact Finder. - Go to tigerweb.geo.census.gov - Next to the home tab, click on TIGERweb Applications. - On the left side of the screen, click on TIGERweb again right under Applications. - On the left side of the map (under the layers tab), select (check) "transportation" and "places and county subdivisions". - Then type an address in the search bar (no need for the zip code). You have to click on the magnifying glass beside the address or hit "enter". This will give you the address right below what you typed. You must click on that blue highlighted address for it to take you to your results. The township is listed on the left side of the map. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Ruth Steele and Pam Wright, awesome librarian! On Thu, Feb 13, 2020 at 1:06 PM Adrianne Schinkai via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:
