Michigan Activity Pass Breaking News: MAP + Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym=Big Outdoor and Indoor Fun For Michigan Public Library Patrons!

All, When your library patrons think of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) http://michiganactivitypass.info program, what comes to mind? Spending a day at one of the nation's premier art museums http://www.dia.org/ perhaps. Or taking in a show at http://www.stagecrafters.org/ Or going for a ride (when there isn't snow covering the tracks, as is the case today) on http://www.southernmichiganrailroad.com/ There are 112 cultural partners in the MAP program, located in every corner of the state from Monroe to Mackinaw City to Marquette (and beyond). Many of our current venues involve indoor activities. What about outdoor activities? Year round outdoor activities? And not just between Memorial Day and Labor Day! Well, soon we will have your library patrons covered there, too! Today I am proud, pleased, and yes, excited even, to announce that, effective May 24, 2015, thanks to our new partnership with Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Recreation and Park Association, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, as well as with our continuing partners Institute of Museum and Library Services, Library of Michigan, and Plymouth Rocket, the Michigan Activity Pass program administered by The Library Network (TLN) will expand to include all state parks and state recreation areas that in previous years have been included in the DNR administered and BCBSM and MRPA sponsored Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym program. Yes, beginning May 24, 2015 your library patrons will be able to access online via the MAP software, passes to state parks and recreation areas from http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/details.aspx?id=497&type=SPRK to http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=426&type=SPRK and all points in between. This will effectively double the number of participating venues in the MAP program! And the media contacts and promotional activities that our new partners can bring to the table will result in publicity for the newly expanded MAP program the likes of which we've never been able to achieve before. On December 28, 2014 we reported that the number of MAP passes circulated in the first seven months of current MAP Year 2, had already exceeded the total number of MAP passes circulated in the full 12 months of MAP Year 1. The new MAP will launch May 24, 2015. The inclusion of state parks and recreation areas, combined with the publicity and promotional activities by our new partners, means that the sky is the limit for MAP Year 3. We will share additional details regarding this expansion of MAP to include the Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym program, in the upcoming weeks and months. In the meantime, on account this is the biggest thing to happen regarding statewide MAP since, well, statewide MAP, please feel free to start spreading the word: Beginning May 24, 2015, MAP + Park and Read/Mi Big Green Gym=Big Outdoor and Indoor Fun for Michigan Public Library Patrons! Thank you for your support and promotion of the (soon to be expanded, bigger and better than ever) Michigan Activity Pass program. Sincerely, Jim Flury Jim Flury Technical Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court Novi, MI 48375 248-536-3100 x133 Fax 248-536-3098 jflury@tln.lib.mi.us

All, In last Friday's totally over the top MAP message I made note of the fact that when we had additional details to share regarding the expansion of the program, we would share them. Well, it's Friday, so that means it's time for yet another over the top MAP message. Today's exciting news concerns our announcement of commitments by 11 new venues to participate in the combined MAP/Mi Big Green Gym program. These 11 destinations span the state from Concord to Copper Harbor. You can't get more "statewide" than that! All are great, family-friendly places to visit, and I know libraries will be proud to talk that fact up to patrons. Drum roll, please: Mann House Historic Site http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62659---,00.html Walker Tavern Historic Site http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_61873---,00.html Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic Site http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62660---,00.html Tawas Point Lighthouse http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62661---,00.html Civilian Conservation Corps Museum http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62652---,00.html Hartwick Pines Logging Museum http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62657---,00.html Father Marquette National Memorial http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62653---,00.html Fayette Historic Townsite http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62654---,00.html Michigan Iron Industry Museum http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62658---,00.html Fort Wilkins and Copper Harbor Lighthouse http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62655---,00.html Michigan Historical Museum http://www.michigan.gov/mhc/0,4726,7-282-61080_62766---,00.html The above 11 venues, along with several hundred others, will join the MAP program starting May 24, or in the case of some of them when the snow melts (my family is originally from the Keweenaw so I am well acquainted with the climate in Copper Harbor), whichever comes first. Of course you will want your library to have the ability to offer passes to these great venues to your patrons, starting May 24. All you need to do is to include a link to the MAP website http://michiganactivitypass.info on your library's website. The beauty of it is, the patrons do all of the work, and you can take all of the credit! We are working with our partners to develop new promotional materials for the expanded MAP program. In the meantime if you'd like to become more acquainted with what the current MAP program is all about, here's a link to a site with all kinds of promotional material, ie bookmarks, a brochure, posters, etc. Please note that this material will be updated prior to the May 24 launch of the new, expanded MAP program: http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/ Finally, and I mention this on account I get this question quite frequently: "What does my library need to do to 'sign up' for the MAP program? Nothing! By virtue of your being a public library in the state of Michigan, I have 'auto-enrolled' your library in MAP. All you need to do to 'sign up' is to include the http://michiganactivitypass.info link on your library's homepage. And of course, promote the program :) Please help get the word out to your patrons and local media contacts, regarding the soon to be expanded MAP program. We appreciate your support for and promotion of, the Michigan Activity Pass program. All, Those of a certain age (like me) will recall a time when "Wednesday is (pasta by a certain manufacturer) day." Indeed a restaurant near where we live maintains that tradition with what it calls "Warehouse Wednesdays", on which their spaghetti which normally sells for $10.99, costs only $5.99. It is a great place to have dinner before walking to the nearby baseball stadium to watch the most famous team in minor league baseball history take the field. If they can have Wednesday as spaghetti day, I am ready to declare "Friday is MAP Day!" Who's with me here??? But I digress. Today we are proud and pleased to announce that effective May 24, 2015 a total of 253 new venues (maybe more!) will be available in the MAP program. Assuming each and every one of our current 112 partner venues chooses to renew with MAP for next year (and why wouldn't they!?), that means 365 destinations! That's one destination for every day of the year! I sense a new marketing slogan here! Maybe we can pick up one additional destination so as to cover the coming leap year... What do I mean by "maybe more?" Well, I've yet to begin the drive to recruit additional venues for MAP for next year. So perhaps we can expand beyond 365, and the leap year 366, and to who knows where. Along those lines, if you have potential MAP partner venues in your library's service area, please reach out to them to explain the benefits the program can bring. Or provide me with their contact information, and I would be glad to do so. If you've looked at the http://michiganactivitypass.info site recently, and I know you all have, you will see that there are a total of 123 venues included. 112 of these are current partners, and 11 are the state historic sites that will be available on May 24. The "map within MAP" is nicely filling up with green balloons. While we are still a bit sparse in some parts of the state, ie the far western U.P., the I-75 corridor in the northern L.P. as well as the far southwestern corner of same, you will see those areas populated with green balloons, too once we begin the data entry process of the additional 253 venues. We are also looking at a revamp of the user software, so that beginning May 24 library patrons will be given a choice as to what type of venue they would like to search for, ie campground, art museum, performing arts venue, etc. Good stuff! Thank you for your promotion of and participation in, the Michigan Activity Pass program.
