Rural Libraries Conference

Hi, We are curious if others are deciding not to attend the conference because of the dicey conditions. This is a video of the Sacre Bleu, the only boat Shepler's has running, leaving St. Ignace yesterday. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10154104350790217 <https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10154104350790217&set=vb.199146720216& type=2&theater> &set=vb.199146720216&type=2&theater I called Shepler's this morning to ask how 150 people would fit on this boat. They hope to be able to put buses and vans on the deck and fill them with people, but they aren't sure they will be able to because yesterday ice was coming over the bow. Getting there is only our first concern. With a shift in the wind it could jam up again and we could be stranded on the island. Ferry service is still subject to cancellation. Are we the only chickens? Nannette Miller Elk Rapids District Library

Hi Nannette, I have half my staff that are no longer attending the rural conference just due to the ferry schedule. I know this winter has been long and drawn out causing many circumstances for the people who did the scheduling to prepare for the conference. HOWEVER, I would hope they will reconsider what attendees will be going through to just attend a session to make the libraries a better place for our communities...not ourselves. A life is more important that money. Maybe someone from the Library of Michigan can inform us if what you are saying is true. It's a rural conference in which small libraries don't have big budgets to fly or pay staff extra time that it will take to get there and back with all the time constraints that are happening due to the weather. I'm not going to the conference, but I am spending this weekend on Mackinac Island, so I have been watching the situation closely. The good news is that it looks like it is going to be in the forties up there all week with some rain, which might help with melting. There are a couple groups on FB that you might consider joining because people in the groups have been following the weather and the ice conditions very carefully. One is Mackinac Island News and Views and the other is I Love St. Ignace. People posting to those groups are primarily locals so they know what's going on. If all else fails, there's always the plane from St. Ignace. :-) Good luck! On Mon, Apr 28, 2014 at 12:44 PM, Nannette Miller <erdl@elkrapidsnet.com>wrote:

Nannette, You are not the only chicken. I am really uneasy about going as well. I just wonder how safe it really is especially since they can't run their passenger boats. Irene Bancroft and I will be there with many of our MMLC members. I appreciate seeing the boat we'll be traveling on over to the island. The owner of Shepler's ferry service was interviewed on WJR this morning. The freight boat has made trips prior to today, however this is the first time this season they've carried passengers. It sounded like they will attempt to load vans or buses on the freight boat to get passengers across. This boat was rebuilt a couple of years ago and has some of the features of an ice-cutter, so Mr. Shepler wasn't at all reluctant to announce that the passenger transfers will begin today. He also mentioned that this is not a speedy boat, not like the ones used in open water, so patience is necessary. One must drive to St. Ignace as nothing is traveling from Mackinac City across the straights. Hope this helps. I agree with the person who wishes to see the hard work and planning for this conference not go to waste. Deb, Thanks for letting us know this information. I am also glad that Nanette brought this up. I would have thought we would have had a passenger ferry and would have been surprised to see cargo and busses on a barge taking us there. This information at least allows us to make a decision whether we want to attend or not.
