Rescues From the Wrecks "Regulations say we have to go out. They don't say we have to come back." That was the United States Life-Saving Service's unofficial motto. Great Lakes life-saving crews rowed to save shipwrecks in a surfboat or used small cannons to shoot a rope to the wreck. No matter how dangerous the weather, orders required them to go out. In 1915, the Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service merged to become the United States Coast Guard.
