Hello all, The content on the Care Guides<http://careguides.med.umich.edu/> site, is a bit different than what is typically found on public hospital sites. All materials posted on the Care Guides site were either created by University of Michigan clinicians, or reviewed and approved by our experts. The Care Guides site enables patients, families and the general public to access the same database our clinicians use to provide patient-education at the bedside or the exam-room, including patient instructions used in our Electronic Medical Record System. This content is quite different from health information purchased from vendors, which is typically what visitors find on public hospital sites. For example, on the Botsford site, the health information content was purchased from ADAM. Our own U-M Health System public website, uofmhealth.org<http://uofmhealth.org/> displays content purchased from Healthwise. (There are several other vendors that sell this type of content, Krames, McKesson and a few others, so basically many public hospital websites display the same generic content on their “health library” or “health information” section). http://careguides.med.umich.edu/ includes over 900 U-M Health System authored materials. Our clinicians create materials if they are not able to find existing materials that meet their needs. Some highlights of our original content include: • Resources for Children with Multiple Disabilities and Becoming an Adult: For Youth with Developmental Disabilities (comprehensive guides focusing on resources in Michigan) - find with the keyword “disabilities" • 21 instructions sheets on using specific types of inhalers - find with the keyword “inhaler” • Pressure Ulcer Patient Video – specifically for people with spinal cord Injury who are at high risk for developing pressure ulcers, a potentially life-threatening complication. Find with the keyword “pressure ulcer” • Taking Care of Your Stoma video and Taking Care of Your Tracheostomy video – find with the keywords “stoma video” or “trach video” These are just a few examples of unique materials available on the Care Guides Site. Might I humbly suggest that each public library consider linking to their local hospital(s) which often have health information materials available on their website, as well as information for the local public on the hospital services and physicians. The database is available for free on the Internet and requires no registration or login.
