We have 200 pairs we are giving away on Monday. We have probably had 200 phone calls just in the last couple of days from people looking for them. Asking for 20 or 50. No matter how many NASA glasses anyone has it is very clear to me that there will never be enough. My impression is that most libraries have already given theirs out or are holding them for Monday. We were excited about this but are rapidly becoming frustrated. I am curious what other libraries are doing and how it has gone. We have decided to stream the NASA feed live (four hours continuous 12-4) in our auditorium to give others an opportunity to connect to the event. We are also doing a passive program in the kids dept that day for making pinhole viewers. Our wonderful PR person sent out an all staff email so that everyone would be on the same page. We are giving out one or two pair per family to our patrons and residents only, until they are gone. We have people calling from outside our service area asking for 8 or 10 pair. Since we only received 300 pair in total, I am saying no to them. It's my opinion that people can share because no one is going to be looking at the sun for the whole two hours and there are other things they can do to watch the progress of the eclipse during that time. We are also frustrated. We are having people come from all over the county and wanting multiple glasses. We are limiting the number as people are asking for 20 or 50. ??? We are telling them that they can share. We have 100 set aside for Monday that will be given to anyone coming to our party first. I agree, we were excited and planned to have a little party. We average 20-30 children at our SRP events and hoped for 5-15 kids for this event. This has become crazy! We ordered 400 pairs and received 250 on Monday afternoon. We started to hand them out right away. Because of the demand, we limited the glasses to 2 pair per family. They were all gone by yesterday afternoon. We are still getting a lot of inquiries. On the plus side of all this: we got a lot of people into the library we haven’t seen in a long time (if ever), so that’s something. Holly Hentz Director Hamburg Township Library 10411 Merrill Rd. ?Our library is lucky enough to have a community room that can accommodate 70 people so we decided to host a viewing party and project the NASA live-stream of the eclipse inside on a big screen. We advertised it on our Facebook and also put up instructions on how to make pinhole cameras and box eclipse viewers. It's not necessarily the same thing, but it will work. We also are going to encourage those that come to the library with the glasses to perhaps share with those that do not. The eclipse isn't going to be super fast, so sharing wouldn't hurt anyone . . . ;) Alger C. Newberry III, Business Librarian Grand Blanc-McFarlen 515 Perry Rd. Madison Heights falls into the first category. We began distribution on Monday to library card holders with a limit of two per family, and as of this morning, we were out.
Even with notification via social media, I anticipate the calls to continue from people looking for them, even if offset somewhat by the notification.

Connie

Watervliet is hosting a viewing party, with live streaming (we hope!), activities and make-and-takes. We started out with 1,000 glasses -- which seemed an impossibly large amount, gave away a couple of hundred to other libraries and have saved 100 for our party. All others were free to anyone walking in the door, while supplies lasted (i.e, they've long since disappeared!) I confess I've been amazed at the interest we've had; didn't think we'd ever dispense 500 let alone 1,000. Silly me! -Sharon On Fri, Aug 18, 2017 at 11:50 AM, Kathleen Dimond < kdimond@manchesterlibrary.info> wrote:
Manchester District Library is giving one pair to each card holder... ( we have precious few), we are also streaming the eclipse here at the library all of Monday.

Our library is lucky enough to have a community room that can accommodate 70 people so we decided to host a viewing party and project the NASA live-stream of the eclipse inside on a big screen. We advertised it on our Facebook and also put up instructions on how to make pinhole cameras and box eclipse viewers. It's not necessarily the same thing, but it will work. We also are going to encourage those that come to the library with the glasses to perhaps share with those that do not. The eclipse isn't going to be super fast, so sharing wouldn't hurt anyone . . . ;)
