Hi Library Land! I was at a meeting at our local Child Advocacy Center yesterday, and a discussion came up about the uptick of children and teens being propositioned by strangers on social media, particularly Snapchat and TikTok. Many mentioned that there is a strong internet safety message being taught to students in lower elementary, but that drops off completely toward middle school and high school. To that end, has anyone partnered with schools and/or local PTOs to provide workshops about internet safety for older students? What programs or resources did you use? I think this is an incredibly important issue and I would love to be able to provide education on keeping your children (and probably the adults, too!) safe while using these apps. Thanks for any input! I will compile responses for anyone interested. [cid:image001.jpg@01DA751E.49042CD0] Marla Drury Juvenile & Young Adult Services Librarian Alma Public Library 500 E. Hi Marla, et. Al., LM is working with Western Michigan University and a small cohort of librarians on a news & media Literacy grant from IMLS called Wonder Media. We are developing programming for just this age group and are in the process of testing it in the field now. Please stay tuned in the coming months for details on how to access the programs from me... We're excited to launch! This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I’ll add that in terms of Internet Safety, there are the following resources that you may consider now, which I shared in a recent Youth & Teen Services Updates email: * FBI’s got some resources if you search “Internet Safety,” though what I looked through seems slightly outdated. * NetSmartz: https://www.missingkids.org/NetSmartz/home * Internet Crimes Against Children: https://www.icactaskforce.org/internetsafety (some great links at the bottom of this page) * National Cybersecurity Alliance: https://staysafeonline.org/resources/protecting-our-kids-data-privacy-is-par... * Dept of Homeland Security: https://www.ice.gov/topics/iGuardians * Remember McGruff<https://mcgruff.org/>?! I’m seriously excited to see he’s still around… https://ymiclassroom.com/lesson-plans/go-for-real/ though these resources seem to be aimed at online shopping. 😃 Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W.
