Does anyone know of anywhere that takes large quantities of books for recycling? Our Friends of the Library are overrun and we need to do something. Programs like Sustainable Shelves or Better World Books are out of the question at this time. The Friends' room is almost to the ceiling and you can't walk to the back. Erin N. We are currently using Thrift Books - it has been a lifesaver for us. We also use Royal Oak Recycling (we have 3 large dumpsters in our parking lot); we can use these for hard and soft cover books that we need to dispose of. Thrift Books sells books for us and recycles books. Books that truly need to go to a different life are sent to the paper recycling. However, we have to remove the hard covers for them to accept. On 6/16/2021 9:55 AM, Kathy Hutchinson via Michlib-l wrote:

https://papergatorrecycling.com/locations/ Their "bin finder" function is finicky; you might have to drive an hour away as I did. It is worth it though, as the bins are large and you do not need to remove the covers. (at least I didn't) The bins are hosted by a place that is using the collection as a fundraiser. Good Luck. *Todd Reed, DirectorSturgis District Library* On Wed, Jun 16, 2021 at 9:35 AM Erin Schmandt via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

Hi Erin – We have 2 Paper Gator bins behind our library! It is a fantastic fundraiser and green initiative. Three years ago I looked at how many tons of paper we had recycled in them and it was equivalent to the weight of 44 cars. Shortly after that we added a second bin. If you call Paper Gator they will tell you whether you can add a bin at your library. It depends if they already have some in the area. Ours is very popular (the local newspaper uses it for printing overflow and we use if for Friends overflow also – you DO NOT have to remove covers!!!). We make about $1000 a year now having two bins. (Library gets $25/ton of paper) Andrea Estelle, MLIS Brighten the Corner Where You Are! I should have included this on my previous email – we are also using Thrift Books! You can recycle books with them and they pay you half the commission after deducting shipping cost. We made about $600 on our first shipment of two pallets. A pallet is 25 boxes. It is a bit labor intensive but if you have the space to save 25 boxes at a time, you stack it on the pallet, wrap it, and their truck will come pick them up. Besides the stacking and wrapping part, it was pretty simple. We are also using that for Friends overflow and weeds. Nonfiction sells best. I also liked that anything Thriftbooks can’t sell they will send on to charities and prisons. <https://www.thriftbooks.com/library/> https://www.thriftbooks.com/library/ Andrea Estelle, MLIS Brighten the Corner Where You Are!
