Re: [Michlib-l] About that job posting

When I was the editor for our local newspaper, I had a young lady show up for a job interview in a prom dress. I also received a resume printed in white letters on a black background. I once had someone pick up and fill out an application while wearing a bathing suit. I never saw the person, but between the time the person asked for the application and it reached my desk, I had heard from at least 4 separate staff members about her. I also once asked a person applying for a treasurer’s position “Is there any reason you wouldn’t pass a criminal background check?” The response: “I’ve never even set foot in a jail, well except to visit my friends.” And, I once had someone answer on the application form “Why did you leave previous position?” with “too close to boss” I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I was sure that I wasn’t going to give an interview to find out! Hi Connie, I agree that there are probably red flags involved when somebody applies incorrectly. At the very least, I count a big strike against the applicant. I normally do telephone interviews as the first step and give an otherwise very qualified applicant a chance to explain why they submitted paper. I would need, however, to see evidence of computer skills on the resume for me to even speak with them. As the employment specialist here at our library, when people come to have help with their resume, I also give them information about conducting themselves at an interview and how to respond to a job posting. Connie, you are so right about this person - he/she does not read instructions well which also may lead to they may want to do what they think is right regardless of instructions. Certainly if a person does not respond to your posting in the way you requested (someone they do not know), the question could be asked how will they respond to you if they know you better. Your reaction is so right on to the fat envelope and the person who sent it. One of the things I say to people is the person with the job available does not want to know everything you have ever did in great detail. Keep your resume and responses down to the basic information requested. No one is interested in the life history of our individual working lives to be hired for a job. I also let them know a person with the job does not have time for all that information as well. It is too bad that people do not ask for help when out job hunting, maybe after several years of not being in the job hunting marketplace.
