Re: [Michlib-l] Class 1 & 2 libraries

Dear Class 1 & 2 Directors: I'm the newer Director of a Class 2 library. We are probably more a Class 1 library, but due to the county-wide millage vote, we are a Class 2 library. I'm trying to convince my Board that we need to have 2 people on duty at all times during open hours. All of us would be considered part-time as the library is usually open 33.5 hours/week, and I usually work about 21 hours/week, which is the most here, including my other 2 staff. There often are times when only 1 person is working. We have no volunteers. Do you have 2 people working, at all times, in the library on a "normal day"? I understand there is always the exception, such as vacation time. Do you have concerns about the safety of the staff? Do you know of any situations where the safety of your staff was a concern? What are your thoughts? I also know if someone wants to do something "bad" or be disruptive, there is no precautions that you could do that would stop them, even having two people. However, I believe there are steps we/I can take to make it less likely for someone to even consider. Thanks!! We have a policy of no less than two staff members if doors are unlocked. No one should be in an unlocked building alone! We are class two. Sent from my iPhone

At Kent District Library we require two employees at all times, never a single employee in a building serving the public. Brian Sent from my iPhone

Our policy is there must be two people in the building when we are open. No exceptions. We're a Class II library in a low crime area. Nannette Miller Elk Rapids District Library On Fri, Jun 18, 2021, 3:27 PM luther area public library via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

I have 3 days a week I am by myself during the week. The other two days I have help. I am not concerned with my safety here in our community. Sue Warner Wolverine On Mon, Jun 21, 2021 at 9:46 AM Nannette Miller via Michlib-l < michlib-l@mcls.org> wrote:

We also have 2 staff on duty when we are open. For the four hours we are open on Saturdays the staff rotates so there is only one staff person but we have a couple of particularly good volunteers who work Saturday, and it is normally quite slow. We try to have two staff not only for safety but also if there is a problem, we want two people so if the problem is a patron we have a "witness" to confirm what went on. We hardly ever have problems so the biggest reason for the second person is patron service. It seems there are times that even on slow days everything happens at once, patrons want to check out, someone needs help with a computer, the phone starts ringing, someone else needs help finding a book, etc.. Good morning, We are a Class 2 library with myself and 3 other staff members. During the day Monday-Friday, there are two of us here. There are a couple of evenings a week, and every other Saturday, that someone works alone. We used to have a policy of 2 people at all times but found there wasn't enough to keep two people busy up front. We do have security cameras, and we are basically two car lengths from the police department next door, so we feel pretty safe.
