Hi, there- At Belding, our computers shut down at closing time. The reasoning behind this is as long as the library is open, I want patrons to have access to our complete slate of services. We are ok waiting the extra minute or so for people to gather coats and leave, in exchange for them being able to have access to our services during our posted open hours. Cheers! Fifteen minutes before closing time we announce that the computers will shut down in 10 minutes (5 minutes before closing time). In the announcement we also tell them to send their print outs and print them out immediately because they will disappear when the computers shut down. If people are still on at the 5 minutes before closing, we send a message saying that their computer is now shutting down--after the message clears, we shut them down. People have become very accustom to this and know that they just shut down. If their print outs disappear, we don't turn the computer back on. It sounds harsh, but if we don't do it, they will just keep taking advantage of the time and staff. There are times where someone is having a hard time printing, etc., so we accommodate them, but we also remind them that computers shut down promptly at 5 minutes before closing. Hope this helps! We have a schedule of annoucements that goes as follows: 30 minutes we announce that we will be closing in 30 minutes and if any kids need to call home for a ride, they should do it now. 20 minutes we announce computers will be going down in ten minutes and please save their data. 10 minutes we announce computers will be going down promptly and the circ desk will be closed in 5 minutes. 5 minutes we announce the library will be closing in five minutes. We close the computers at 5 minutes to. We give a verbal warning that the computers will be shut down 15 minutes prior, followed by a light flicker warning for those who are deaf or have a hearing aid. Hope this helps a bit.
