Working as an Intern in a public library is a great introduction to the profession. You will learn on the job by actually doing the job with assistance from experienced librarians. LIBRARY INTERN, YOUTH SERVICES Roseville Public Library Salary: $18.50 to start. The Roseville Public Library is an integral part of the dynamic City of Roseville. Our employees have an important role in the community assisting visitors in checking out physical and digital materials, providing programs, assisting with technology, advocating for libraries and encouraging the love of reading. HOURS: Part-time, year-round. Works approximately 28 hours per week including mornings, evenings and Saturdays. The library is closed on Saturdays June – August and all Sundays. DUTIES * Works primarily in the Youth Area assisting children, parents and caregivers with readers’ advisory and reference questions. * Creates, plans, implements and promotes innovative youth programs under the supervision of the Youth Services Coordinator. * Develops materials to promote the successful use of the library’s youth collection. * Develops and implements youth outreach programs. * Actively considers equity, diversity and inclusion in decision-making. * Assists patrons with technology questions and downloading digital content. * Receives requests and concerns from patrons to share with a supervisor. * Provides creative social media content to promote the library. * Participates in staff meetings, workshops, conferences and community events. * Assists with promotional programs off-site and outside of normal library hours. * Interprets and follows library policies and procedures. * Maintains a clean, neat and welcoming environment for all. * Performs related duties and general library work as required. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Teacher Education, Early Childhood Education, K-12 Education or equivalent. Completion of at least twelve credit hours toward a Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program. * A passion for library services to children, teens and families. * Punctuality and dependability. * Communicate effectively, professionally and politely with patrons and employees. * Knowledge of children’s literature. * Ability to use library-related technology, Microsoft Office Suite, social media, desktop publishing software and mobile devices and instruct patrons of all ages in their use. Ability to create online programs. * Work as a team to provide exceptional service and innovative programs. * Good organizational skills; ability to prioritize duties and tasks, work independently and assume responsibility. * Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record (based on City of Roseville standards) or a State of Michigan Identification Number. * As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must pass a background check and pre-employment physical. * The job requires moderate physical exertion such as sitting or standing in one position, viewing a computer screen for long periods and using hands and fingers in activities requiring good coordination and dexterity. The job also requires the physical strength and dexterity to handle up to 50 pounds in weight, transport loaded carts and bend and lift arms overhead. Resolves issues or informs immediate supervisor. May act as librarian in charge at times. May be responsible for securing the building at closing. * Maintains clean, neat and welcoming environment. * Participates in staff meetings, workshops, conferences and community events. * Assists with promotional programs off-site and outside of normal library hours. * Participates in state and local professional organizations and keeps informed about current developments and trends in public library services. * Joins the rest of the staff in keeping our building and entrances safe and neat. May occasionally be required to lightly shovel the snow from an entrance, spread sno-melt or pick up a bag of trash from the parking lot.
