pagebanner.JPG Position Opening: Assistant Editor, Michigan History for Kids and Education Support Manager The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) seeks a qualified individual to serve as Assistant Editor, Michigan History for Kids and Education Support Manager. This full-time position is funded by a major two-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Assistant Editor, Michigan History for Kids and Education Support Manager is part of a team implementing our recently funded grant "Expanding the Story: Engaging Michigan's Urban, Minority, and Underserved Communities." This includes developing content for the re-launch of Michigan History for Kids magazine; support for our flagship educational program, Michigan History Day; efforts to increase diversity in our publications and programs; development and distribution of curriculum; and school outreach activities. Duties and Responsibilities Publications * Serve as Assistant Editor of Michigan History for Kids. Write, edit and recruit content which fits within the state's Grade Level Content Expectations for Social Studies, the new C3 Framework, and features the rich history of Michigan through a lens of racial equity. * Assist the editor with content, and other issues related to the magazine. * Develop a test market with a system to track teacher feedback and evaluation. * Assist with development and execution of our new website for Michigan History for Kids * Provide occasional content for the Society's other publications. * Work with HSM's Director of Communication to ensure all magazine, curriculum and other content is consistent with other Society communications, branding, style, etc. Educational Programs * As Education Support Manager provide support to the Education Program Manager in administering Michigan History Day (National History Day in Michigan) * Conduct appropriate outreach to educators and administrators in school settings for both Michigan History for Kids and Michigan History Day. * Develop curriculum which complements Michigan History for Kids, Michigan History Day and other educational outreach at HSM. * Assist in public outreach for HSM. Website and Social Media * Assist with development and execution of our new website for Michigan History for Kids which includes digital delivery of the magazine and age-appropriate interactive components for online use. * Assist in developing educational content for the HSM website. * Assist with social media as assigned. Other * Assist at HSM events as requested. * Provide occasional editorial and educational support to HSM staff as requested. * Other duties as assigned. Reports to: Director of Communications (for Michigan History for Kids) of the Historical Society of Michigan. Also works closely with the Education Program Manager (Michigan History Day and education programs). Salary: $30,000-32,000. Includes health insurance, retirement and vacation benefits. Minimum Qualifications * Three to five years of professional experience as a K-8 educator. * Experience in developing curriculum for grades K-8. * Excellent writing skills, especially for children aged 7-10. * Bachelor's degree in Education or in English, History or related field with significant Education credentials and experience. * Ability and experience in public speaking. * Copy editing skills and experience using and working with style guides. * Experience working with teachers and other educators. * Experience using e-learning software such as Adobe Captivate. * Experience with and interest in Michigan history and people of color. * Experience with Microsoft Office * Experience with Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign a plus. * Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and managerial skills. * Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member. * Interest in or experience working with nonprofit organizations.
