We made it!! We received 200 pairs of glasses and only passed them out at our 2 programs. The first program was last month and 40 attended, so that left us 150 pairs for today. We held strong and did not pass any out ahead of time (whew, that was hard!). We expected maybe 100 people. We had activities such as coloring pages, word search, galaxy slime, plus moon themed snacks and of course the coveted eclipse glasses. We ended up with more than 300 in attendance with many waiting in line for 30 minutes or more to receive their glasses. We ran out in the end and the last groups had to share. The best thing about the day, besides the awesome turnout, was the fact that almost all were very respectful, calm, and willing to share. I hope your day went as well as ours! We survived the eclipse! We had 200 pair of glasses to pass out (after sharing our stock with other libraries) and did limit to 2 per family at our event starting at 1:00 today. Everyone was patient and accepted our 2 pair limit and we had over 500 people in attendance at our "little" library (not everyone stayed here to view the eclipse). Our parking lot was full of people--local and from outside our area--- sharing glasses to watch the eclipse for over an hour and a half. It did help that we fed them snacks of Little Debbie's "Moonpies, Cosmic Brownies, and Star Crunchs". While they all had fun, the staff is glad to no longer have to answer the phone calls asking about the glasses. We're glad it's over! We survived. Ended up with about 140 glasses, after sharing with other DPL branches and handing out a very few to others. It was hard to count people as they were in and out and roaming the whole time. People were great about sharing glasses. We also made pinhole viewers, and showed how a colander makes a multiple viewer. And had NASA's coverage streaming. Kids and some adults made viewers, decorated hats, made their own eclipse with coffee filters, and did a space-related craft from Arts and Scraps. I found it interesting how quickly people melted away after the eclipse reached its peak. They weren't interested in watching the shadow recede. We ended up having a very positive experience. We also ran out of glasses to give away long before the event but we saved 100 to share on the day. Due to the large number of calls we were receiving we re-evaluated how we planned to handle the safety glasses giveaway and we increased the number of snacks and drinks we planned to pass out. The people in attendance far outnumbered the glasses that we had available but people were very good about sharing. Our local high school robotics team had some wonderful eclipse related activities in our large community room with outdoor activities on the patio as well. We had our telescopes with filters available, made sun cookies, invited people to contribute to a large painting of the sun, and had other activities outside the building. We had a few negative comments but the positive comments far outweighed the negative. We would happily do this again using what we have learned this time make the next event even more enjoyable. We also survived! It did take all of our energies to keep smiles on our faces - but we all made it to the end. We started this adventure with over 1000 glasses. We held back 200 for our viewing party. The phones rang non-stop all Monday morning (not to mention the 1,000s of calls the previous week). I was astounded at the turnout. At our event we handed out one pair of glasses per family or per party - to make them last. We asked that people return the glasses when they left the library grounds so other people could get a glimpse. We estimate we had about 600 people in attendance. Everyone shared marvelously. We only had a few grumpy people that were upset with us for not having enough glasses and for not being allowed to take them off grounds. All in all it was a great turnout - most everyone was truly appreciative of us providing them the viewing venue. I would definitely do this again - but I would save all the glasses for our event! What a miserable day. We had 200 pairs, and we said we would be giving them away at our eclipse viewing party beginning at 1 p.m. People started to line up at 7:30 and demanded I give them out now. They all had a sob story. Meanwhile back in the building two people are needed to answer all the phone calls about glasses. In the last week we have probably had a thousand phone calls about eclipse glasses. So I had angry people who didn't get any screaming at me from the end of line, and at least one nasty post on facebook - I had to work its not fair. The people at the viewing party who had them were wonderful about sharing with those who didn't, and everyone tried out the pinhole viewing boxes. After this experience I am not sure I would do this again. All anger about not enough glasses, very little appreciation. It's been a long time since I spent most of my work day outside. I am glad we stocked up on bottled water to hand out. Connie On Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 3:16 PM, LVW Mary Russell <lvwoperations@llcoop.org> wrote:

Both our staff and our the parks and rec staff had a flood of phone calls in the past week, but with the help of our police department and the Warren Astronomical Society we all survived. Our local newspaper got some pictures. http://media.voicenews.com/2017/08/21/photos-solar-eclipse-viewing-party-in-...
