Hello~ I am wondering if any of you have a Breastfeeding Policy. If so, would you be kind enough to share? I don't want to start a debate :o) Thanks! Happy Wednesday! Karen Karen M. Smith Assistant Branch Librarian - Head of Children's Services Livonia Public Library 32777 Five Mile Road Livonia, Michigan 48154 734-466-2454 ksmith@livoniapubliclibrary.org "Are all librarians this much trouble?" ~Brendan Fraser in The Mummy Returns

Mothers are always nursing in our library, and no one has ever complained or taken issue with it. We even hold a breastfeeding mothers support group in the Children's Room on a regular basis. Having a policy which discourages mothers from being able to nurse their children seems like it may only stir up trouble. Heather Lander Children's Librarian Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library 317 N. Hi All~ I want to thank you all for your responses. The general consensus is that since there is a law in place, there is no need for a policy. I want to make it clear though, it was never my intention to discourage nursing mothers or violate their rights in any way. I hope everyone is having a great Thursday! Karen Karen M. To back up Karen on her point about not wanting to discourage or violate the rights of the nursing mother, the intention is to have a policy in place in case someone else objects so we can say, "hey look, this is our policy, now go away and leave this woman alone". Better to be proactive than reactive. ------------------ Donna Winter, Automation Services Librarian Livonia Public Library 32777 Five Mile Road Livonia, MI 48154 ph: 734-466-2675 ----- Original Message -----

Although Mount Clemens Public Library doesn't have a policy with regard to nursing mothers--and I personally feel this is a very healthy activity--given some of the questionable "characters" who frequent this library, I certainly would not encourage the practice here.
