ICYMI: New equity and social justice principle added to ALA Code of Ethics

Hello, I would like to remind everyone that the ALA has no authority over any library whatsoever. Just because they are moving to make libraries places of leftist activism, pushing ideologies stemming from Marxism and critical race theory, does not mean you have to as well. I am happy to see that the American Library Association added a ninth principle to their Code of Ethics that address equity and social justice and that a fellow librarian shared it with the Michigan library world. I feel it is long overdue. I do not feel by creating fair, equitable and just environments or teaching a more full history of our country that we are adhering to Marxist views. We are making our libraries more welcoming to all in an equitable manner, which is what libraries should do. I, for one, am extremely proud of the strides being made to address the imbalance and inequity faced by huge portions of the US population. I commend the individual librarians and libraries who make the effort to represent *all* of their community's population with empathy, acceptance, and good will. Seeing value in, and advocating for, others is a thing of beauty and not something to be shamed. Hi, all --
Announced a few days ago < https://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2021/07/ala-adopts-new-code-ethics-principle-racial-and-social-justice>,
ALA has added a 9th principle to the ALA Code of Ethics <https://www.ala.org/tools/ethics>, reading:
We affirm the inherent dignity and rights of every person. We work to recognize and dismantle systemic and individual biases; to confront inequity and oppression; to enhance diversity and inclusion; and to advance racial and social justice in our libraries, communities, profession, and associations through awareness, advocacy, education, collaboration, services, and allocation of resources and spaces.

Agree! We serve every segment of our populations. We are purveyors of unbiased information. Striving for inclusion and diversity in our collections, services, and practices is a fantastic thing - it allows us to reach each patron where they are at. I, for one, would also like to point out that many people (including myself) have been using their courage to stand up for exactly this type of change and will continue to do so. Kudos, ALA. Hi, all --
Announced a few days ago <https://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2021/07/ala-adopts-new-code-ethics-principle-racial-and-social-justice>, ALA has added a 9th principle to the ALA Code of Ethics <https://www.ala.org/tools/ethics>, reading:
We affirm the inherent dignity and rights of every person. We work to recognize and dismantle systemic and individual biases; to confront inequity and oppression; to enhance diversity and inclusion; and to advance racial and social justice in our libraries, communities, profession, and associations through awareness, advocacy, education, collaboration, services, and allocation of resources and spaces.

I would just like to point out that not only are our patrons a diverse population, but librarians and staff who work in our institutions are as well. When someone on this listserv claims that addressing systemic issues such as (but not limited to) unfair treatment based on race, gender, and sexuality is politically motivated, "marxist," and doesn't belong in libraries, you're sending a direct message to anyone who faces these issues and works in the library world that *they do not belong as well*. And you're saying that on a list for library staff across the entire state. This is damaging to the library institutions across the entire state, not just your personal library where you believe, rightfully or not, "nobody like that" works or lives there. Libraries must be for *everyone*. Including the people whose identities have been forcefully politicised, marginalized, and ignored. Hello,
I would like to remind everyone that the ALA has no authority over any
library whatsoever. Just because they are moving to make libraries places of
leftist activism, pushing ideologies stemming from Marxism and critical race
theory, does not mean you have to as well.
Start speaking up and having more courage about this. The parents in schools
can do it. Where do you think the kids go AFTER school?

Thank you, Journey, for stating this so eloquently and passionately. It is not just our patrons that this mindset effects, but library staff as well. While I have always felt welcome in my library, this thread serves to highlight that this is not universal in libraries across the State of Michigan. My existence is not political. This is a human rights issue, not a political debate. I would just like to point out that not only are our patrons a diverse population, but librarians and staff who work in our institutions are as well. When someone on this listserv claims that addressing systemic issues such as (but not limited to) unfair treatment based on race, gender, and sexuality is politically motivated, "marxist," and doesn't belong in libraries, you're sending a direct message to anyone who faces these issues and works in the library world that _they do not belong as well_. And you're saying that on a list for library staff across the entire state. This is damaging to the library institutions across the entire state, not just your personal library where you believe, rightfully or not, "nobody like that" works or lives there.
Libraries must be for everyone. Including the people whose identities have been forcefully politicised, marginalized, and ignored.

I'm proud to work in a library where all visitors are welcome and where we make our best effort to provide the services needed to all. I agree wholeheartedly with Kristin, Cindi, Jessica, Kristen, Amber, Suzy, James, Jake, and Meagan. Thank goodness there are libraries all across our wonderful state where we loudly and proudly celebrate diversity and inclusion by confronting the inequity and oppression that has and continues to exist in our world!
Libraries are the best!

I know there have been calls for this thread to discontinue, comparing it to a Facebook thread. For me, hearing different viewpoints (sometimes accompanied by links to more in-depth explanations) is helpful and thought-provoking. Threads like this one challenges me to think about what a public library is, what I believe, and how all of this plays out in my service to my community. I agree that no one should be name-calling and a couple of posts have inched very close to that line, but I disagree that we should not be talking about difficult topics just because they evoke strong emotions. My hope is that, rather than shutting down threads where people express very disparate opinions, we can continue to have them in an atmosphere of respect and openness. Karyn, I hope they are going somewhere that they can feel welcomed and valued, and free to explore controversial topics, opposing viewpoints, other cultures, and to broaden their horizons. I hope that the Library strives to be that place. Hello,
I would like to remind everyone that the ALA has no authority over any library whatsoever. Just because they are moving to make libraries places of leftist activism, pushing ideologies stemming from Marxism and critical race theory, does not mean you have to as well.
Start speaking up and having more courage about this. The parents in schools can do it. Where do you think the kids go AFTER school?

Hi, all --
Announced a few days ago < https://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2021/07/ala-adopts-new-code-ethics-prin...
, ALA has added a 9th principle to the ALA Code of Ethics <https://www.ala.org/tools/ethics>, reading:
We affirm the inherent dignity and rights of every person. We work to recognize and dismantle systemic and individual biases; to confront inequity and oppression; to enhance diversity and inclusion; and to advance racial and social justice in our libraries, communities, profession, and associations through awareness, advocacy, education, collaboration, services, and allocation of resources and spaces.
