He won a prize from us last Summer. When I told him we could not ship to California he sent us the shipping label to ship to him. So I did. He was actually very nice and pleasant. He told me due to certain health issues (which I will not disclose because it was a one-on-one chat) he was unable to leave home during the pandemic and was trying to keep busy. He mentioned to me he signed up all over the country and some would not send his prizes which he understood but was hoping I would send if he sent the shipping label. The prize he won was just a water bottle, not worth much, but he wanted it and overpaid on the shipping label. All in all he was a nice kid who just wanted to do something while bored at home. Considering all that, I would say Aaron Yang is just a veracious reader and we shouldn't squash people like him from participating. Just my opinion. I've been contacted by Aaron three times in last six years. I will say his response to being told that we couldn't mail him prizes was much better last year than it was six years ago. Greetings! The act protects any record that identifies someone’s use of the library. The act does not define “patron,” but the common meaning as it pertains to libraries is that, a “patron” is anyone who uses library services- not only those people that are “card holders.” The “person” language in the statute quoted by James is also broad. The act doesn’t specify a particular type of person. When there is no included definition, the law tends to look to the “common” meaning of a word. Individual libraries may wish to consult their attorneys on this. I would suggest caution regarding discussions using specific names. Also, if libraries intend for their programs/activities, etc., to be restricted to “cardholders” or members of their communities, that information should be incorporated into the activities’ policies and publicity information so it is clear that his restriction applies to everyone not a member of the community.. Applying such a restriction on the spot, or inconsistently, without a written policy, could create problems for the library. I encourage libraries to review their policies with their attorneys. I've been "yanged" twice (at two different libraries). Both times he registered for the programs but didn't actually participate, and then requested we send him prizes. He said it was part of a group "bet" to see who could get the most summer reading prizes sent to them. He also registered for Youth programs despite being an adult, which didn't sit well with anyone. Why would we take away a prize, purchased with a limited budget, from our young readers for your personal bet to get free stuff? We responded that it was only for residents (at one library), and only for those who could pick up in-person (at the other). NPR made him sound all sweet and innocent. Aaron Yang is neither. The origin story presented in the NPR piece is a new one. He has been making the rounds is 2014 or so. Originally, this was a “bet between some friends” and now it happened because he accidentally clicked on and joined a Teen program for a library in TX. He’s been emailing libraries for years. Now, with some many programs online, things are easier for him. Nope, not buying it then, not buying it now. Only plus I will give him is that he’s a little less pushy now. Below is his 2014-16 origin story. - Rebecca ☺ [DPL_Horiz_log_4c blue] This is a post from ALA Library Think Tank on FB page from May 18,2016: Remember our Summer Reading inquiry from Aaron? I received an email response from him.... The main reason I want to participate is because of IDDDYSRCC USA. It is for I Double Dog Dare You Summer Reading Challenge Contest USA. It was created 2 years ago by me and my friends. We had a semi-boring summer in 2014 and I came up with the idea. We all did the dare and I came in 2nd place last summer. It was so much fun and we kept doing it every year. Basically, we google search all the libraries in the USA and email every single one. What is IDDDYSRCC? IDDDYSRCC is a contest, or dare, that was created by 2 middle schoolers in 2014. Now in high school, the dare has continued. The dare has been moved into a contest and there are now 5 people in it. Each year, a king and queen of IDDDYSRCC. In order to be eligible to be in the contest, members must be first initiated. There will be a test to see the ability of the member’s common sense and credibility. During the contest, the contesters must outnumber the number of the libraries that the king and queen are doing. For example, if I did 5 libraries and the king did 7, I lose. These libraries must not be in California. How does the point system/rules work? At the beginning of the contest, each person is to keep a secret on how many libraries that person is doing. Everyone will reveal their secrets at the awards dinner and party. Each member must at least email 2 libraries in each state of USA. This year, Canada is added for more amusement. Here is the point system: 1 point if the state is on the west coast of USA, excluding California. 2 points if state is located in the mountain regions 3 for midwestern states 4 for east coast states 5 for Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada Additional points: 2 points if you win a prize drawing at a library on the west coast 3 if you win a prize drawing at a library in mountain regions 4 for midwestern area 5 for east coast 6 for Hawaii and Alaska, AND 7 total plus the 5 if library is located in Canada. 10 points automatically if you win the grand prize at a library, counts only if you receive it! 20 for Canada!!!! Cant cajole a library to mail things? Beg them to mail at least something small, must have library name or address either on the item or envelope,box,package,etc.. and receive 5 points for trying. 5 for USA, 10 for Canada. I will supply postage. What if I sent some first class stamps in an envelope and you can use them to send me things in the mail? Aaron

Aaron, you certainly could participate by self-guiding on your own by printing out the summer reading trackers - we will be posting the reading trackers on our website soon. Unfortunately, to truly participate you would need to be local to receive any incentives or prizes as we cannot ship items due to the cost. I think it is awesome you reached out to the library and want to strongly encourage you to look into your local public library in CA and see what kinds of programs & events they may have planned. Many libraries across the country participate in Summer Reading!
Thank you, Beth

Hi, My name is Aaron Yang and I was wondering if I could participate in the summer reading program for teens. Unfortunately, I live in the state of California, so I would really appreciate it if you can make an exception for me.
Thanks, Aaron

Both times he registered for the programs but didn't actually participate, and then requested we send him prizes. He said it was part of a group "bet" to see who could get the most summer reading prizes sent to them. He also registered for Youth programs despite being an adult, which didn't sit well with anyone. Why would we take away a prize, purchased with a limited budget, from our young readers for your personal bet to get free stuff? We responded that it was only for residents (at one library), and only for those who could pick up in-person (at the other).
