I have a patron looking for a public library that offers mac computers for public use. She has a school assignment that requires downloading some apple only software. I am going to look through the Mich-Lib archives to see if this was asked before. In the meantime, does anyone know if/where macs are available to the public? Thanks! One thing to consider, assuming you can find a public or university library with Macs that the patron can go to: will the library allow software to be downloaded and installed on their computers? We’re a Windows library here, running Deep Freeze to lock down the public computers. If a library system has Macs they might also have Deep Freeze or another reboot-to-restore software installed that doesn’t allow non-administrator accounts the capability of installing software. Jen, Good evening from Traverse City! We have two modern Mac OS based computers in the lab at our main branch, but like Dennis suggested, we use Deep Freeze and generally don't allow users to install their own applications (for reasons related to security, maintainability, and licensing). That said, if a needed application has a free or low cost license and doesn't require a ton of maintenance, we like to respond to patron requests. I'd be interested in what applications the patron in question needs to run for her class. Cheers, Scott W. We have a Mac for public use but I don't know if she'd be able to download anything onto it. It has the same protections as all of the rest of our public computers, so maybe . . .
