Yesterday (Tuesday, June 18, 2019), Governor Whitmer signed HB 4119 HB4119 amends section 13a,( MCL 42.13a<http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-42-13a> ) of The Charter Township Act, which is the section that authorizes Charter Townships to establish Public Libraries. This amendment will enable Township Libraries that are currently established under a repealed act to RE-ESTABLISH as a Charter Township Library. This means, for example, that Township Libraries located in Charter Townships that are currently established under the 1955 School Code (1955 PA 269) (which was repealed in 1976), can, under this amendment, be re-established by their Charter Township as a Charter Township Library, and no longer operate under a repealed act. While it will only likely affect a few libraries, this amendment is a welcome solution for those libraries that will benefit.
