For those who charge for internet use. . .

Can you please tell me how much you charge (e.g. $5 for 60 minutes), and what your yearly revenue from those charges are on your budget. And, also what about the staff time involved in monitoring this activity: worth the investment of time? Thanks. Sylvia Merz, Director Leland Township Library 203 E. Cedar St., P.O. Sylvia: Please post what you find out. I didn't think any public library was charging for internet I would be very interested to know how many there are in the state. In Rochester, MN in the late 90s we charged $5.00 for a 30 day guest card, mostly for (nonresident) people in town for Mayo Clinic who wanted email access. I have never heard of a library charging their own tax payers for this basic service. I am horrified enough by those of you who charge "rental fees" to check out DVDs. Good luck Sylvia. Hi Sylvia, I don't think anyone charges for internet or computer use. The public pays for it through their tax dollars. And as for the staff time in monitoring this activity, I feel that what we invest in terms of staff and time, comes back to us in greater public support of the super service and access to technology we provide to everyone, young and old. Sylvia, I work at Ann Arbor District Library and we don't charge for computer/internet use - just printing. I don't know if Ypsilanti District Library charges for computer use, but they do charge non-card-holders to use their wi-fi. If you're not a card owner, it costs $2 for a guest pass. I used to study there when I was in school because studying at AADL was difficult as patrons would still ask me questions. I would encourage anyone interested in the charging for internet topic to review the following topic sheet on "Public Library Fees for Internet Access" found on the Library of Michigan site for more information: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/lm_2014_PublicLibraryFee... You can find this sheet and others under the by visiting our home page at www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan, selecting For Libraries, Administration, and Trustees. You can then scroll down to the Trustee's Corner for several topic sheets relating to legal issues in libraries. Shannon ------------------------ Shannon White Library of Michigan 702 W. At the Ypsilanti District Library, we do charge $2.00 for computer/internet use if the patron is 18 years old or older and does not have a library card. We encourage residents to get a library card which patrons can use to access computers/internet for free. We do not charge patrons under 18 years of age for computer/internet use.
