Hello Michigan Library Hive Mind! I've got a question about printing tax forms for our library patrons. Even though we don't receive any federal forms for our patrons, we have printed them off from the IRS website in the past. Today, when a patron requested form 1096, I found the PDF on the IRS website, but it includes a warning that the form cannot be printed and scanned. Instead, it asks the user to order the form. Does anyone know why this would be? Is this only the case with certain forms? Thank you, Dillon -- Dillon Geshel Library Director Portage Lake District Library 58 Huron Street, Houghton MI (906)-482-4570

I think that like the 1099 family of forms, it is an “employer” form. Employers are supposed to fill them out and issue them to their employees. And the IRS wants the employers to get those (blank) forms directly from the IRS. Probably so they can register or keep track of who the employers are, I guess? Hi Dillon Those forms are considered machine readable and many are multi-part, so they cannot be printed on a copy machine. They are printed in red ink. The 1096 is the cover sheet that is sent along with any 1097, 1098 or 1099s that are filed. It's the same with the W2 and W3 forms, multi-part and machine readable. The forms can be ordered on the IRS website - our library orders some of them to have on hand for patrons. They are also sold at Staples. I hope this answers your question :-) Mary Vergowven Reference Librarian Ellis Library and Reference Center Monroe County Library System 3700 South Custer, Monroe, MI 48161 (734) 241-5277 mary.vergowven@monroe.lib.mi.us<mailto:mary.vergowven@monroe.lib.mi.us> ________________________________ From: michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org [michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org] on behalf of Dillon Geshel [dgeshel@pldl.org] Sent: Thursday, January 28, 2016 3:41 PM To: Michlib-l@mcls.org Subject: [Michlib-l] IRS Tax Forms Hello Michigan Library Hive Mind!
