Great Lakes Shipwrecks Speaker?

Hi All, Have any of you had a good speaker on the topic of Great Lakes shipwrecks? If so, I'd welcome your thoughts! Thanks, -- Kimberly Schaaf Librarian Springfield Twp. Library 12000 Davisburg Rd. Davisburg MI, 48350 248-846-6550

Kimberly I can highly recommend Fred Stonehouse. Fred is a resident of Marquette. He is the author of many books about the Great Lakes and shipping. He is an engaging speaker, and travels quite a bit, so he should be able to get to your neck of the woods. Fred has written over 30 books on the Great Lakes, her ships, shipwrecks and culture. As you can imagine, he spends a great deal of time in libraries researching, and treats libraries very well. More about Fred can be found on his website http://frederickstonehouse.com/ His email is stonef@charter.net <mailto:stonef@charter.net> I can assure you that you and your audiences will find Fred engaging, interesting and lots of fun. Maritime historian James Spurr did a great job for us on the Edmund Fitzgerald shipwreck. ( He’s also done war of 1812 in the Great Lakes). He is an engaging speaker and his presentation always draws lots of folks, especially men. May I also suggest Frederick Stonehouse (Maritime Historian, author and lecturer) who has authored over 30 books on maritime history – One of his books was called: The Wreak of the Edmund Fitzgerald;” or Joel Stone, Senior Curator of the Detroit Historical Society. Both are great speakers. Mary Anne Smith Administrative Assistant Statewide Library Services Library of Michigan 702 West Kalamazoo, P.O. We had Frederick Stonehouse for three programs during our Big Read Grant this year. He was amazing and can speak to all ages. We had him talk about his book, Haunted Lakes. I highly recommend him. Kimberly, I second the recommendation of Valerie Olson van Heest. She is a founding member of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association (www.michiganshipwrecks.org), a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, an award-winning author, and has designed exhibits for several museums. She has presented at many regional shipwreck festivals and lots of libraries and historical societies. She and her organization were actively involved in the discovery of nine shipwrecks in Lake Michigan and they are pursuing several more, one in collaboration with best-selling author Clive Cussler. I have heard her speak on numerous occasions and never been disappointed. There were so many helpful responses given to this question! I put all the speaker suggestions into a simple word doc in case anyone is interested in seeing all the recommendations in list format. If the attachment won't open for you, let me know and I'll email a pdf version directly to you. Thanks for all the input! -- Kimberly Schaaf Librarian Springfield Twp. Library 12000 Davisburg Rd.
