Re: [Michlib-l] Genesee District Library- Bed Bug Event.

Just a reminder to all libraries that participate in RIDES - We do have a RIDES policy regarding infestations. If an infestation were to spread to sorting centers or to the RIDES main hub warehouse, it could potentially be spread across the entire state, and nobody wants to see that happen! Thanks- Sue Infestation 1. The purpose of this policy is to prevent the spread of any pest infestations that may occur with libraries participating in RIDES. 2.An active infestation will exhibit live adult or larval insects, fresh frass (insect excrement and debris), and damage. 3.Infestation information and solutions are posted on the RIDES Procedures web page. 4.Any item that has a potential infestation should not be sent in the RIDES system, under any circumstances. 5.Libraries will be responsible for the following in the event of an active infestation problem at their site. Notify RIDES immediately via the RIDES Assistance Form Suspend delivery service immediately until the infestation has been resolved. Clean any totes or materials that may have been affected by the infestation, as appropriate for the type of infestation, before delivery service is restored. 6. If an infestation is detected by a library site in any incoming totes or materials, the library should: Notify RIDES immediately via the RIDES Assistance form. Contain and isolate any affected totes and materials. 7. If an infestation is detected at a RIDES hub warehouse: RIDES will be responsible for notifying any potentially impacted libraries. RIDES will be responsible for cleaning any totes or materials that may have been affected by the infestation, as appropriate for the type of infestation, before delivery service is restored. Dear Colleagues, Today, Tuesday, August 08, 2017, library staff discovered evidence of bed bugs among items returned to the Mt. Morris Branch of the Genesee District Library. The items in question have been removed and the building will remain closed until it has been treated, inspected and given the all clear. We look forward to serving our patrons from this branch as soon as this issue is resolved. In November of 2015, we developed procedures and trained staff on bed bugs. Today that preparation paid off. Although, the branch is temporarily closed we expect it to be treated and given the all clear soon. Shortly prior to this email we also sent out a press release. We want the public to know, from the source, what happened and what is being done. I want to assure you all that we are on top of this event and it will end with the bugs being contained and eradicated. It is business as usual at all of our other 18 branches.
