To provide a little bit of balance, I would add to the list either:Coping with Confrontations and Encounters with the Police, Claudine G. Wirths and Mary Bowman-Kruhm (Rosen)or for high/low readersEverything you Need to Know About Dealing with the Police, Maryann Miller (Rosen) For teens who are very engrossed in these topics, I would steer them toward some classic titles to provide some historical perspective:Manchild in the Promised Land, Claude BrownSoul on Ice, Eldridge CleaverAutobiography of Malcolm X, Alex HaleyMakes Me Wanna Holler, Nathan McCalland maybe some Richard Wright ADDRESS: ADDRESS: Cynthia Dooley ADDRESS: ADDRESS: Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility Library ADDRESS: 1326 St. Antoine ADDRESS: Detroit, MI 48226 ADDRESS: 313-967-2132 fax 313-967-2009 ADDRESS: Email cjpdooley@yahoo.com ADDRESS: cdooley@co.wayne.mi.us ADDRESS: ADDRESS: ADDRESS: ADDRESS: ADDRESS: From: "Lancaster, Catherine (MDE)" <LancasterC5@michigan.gov> To: "Michlib-L (michlib-l@mcls.org)" <michlib-l@mcls.org> Sent: Monday, July 11, 2016 3:59 PM Subject: [Michlib-l] Teen Reading List <!--#yiv8150119965 _filtered #yiv8150119965 {font-family:"Cambria Math";panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;} _filtered #yiv8150119965 {font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} _filtered #yiv8150119965 {font-family:"Book Antiqua";panose-1:2 4 6 2 5 3 5 3 3 4;}#yiv8150119965 #yiv8150119965 p.yiv8150119965MsoNormal, #yiv8150119965 li.yiv8150119965MsoNormal, #yiv8150119965 div.yiv8150119965MsoNormal {margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;}#yiv8150119965 a:link, #yiv8150119965 span.yiv8150119965MsoHyperlink {color:#0563C1;text-decoration:underline;}#yiv8150119965 a:visited, #yiv8150119965 span.yiv8150119965MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:#954F72;text-decoration:underline;}#yiv8150119965 span.yiv8150119965EmailStyle17 {font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;color:windowtext;}#yiv8150119965 .yiv8150119965MsoChpDefault {font-family:"Calibri", sans-serif;} _filtered #yiv8150119965 {margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in;}#yiv8150119965 div.yiv8150119965WordSection1 {}-->Hennepin County Library (MN) put this list out over the weekend:https://hclib.bibliocommons.com/list/share/642401647_hcl_social_media/669879... There's a book called When We was Fierce by e. E. Charlton-Trujillo coming out August 9th that would probably be a good addition to the list. Fifteen-year-old Theo isn't looking for trouble, but when he and his friends witness a brutal attack on Ricky-Ricky, an innocent boy who doesn't know better than to walk right up to the most vicious gang leader around, he's in trouble for real. And in this neighborhood, everything is at stake. In a poignant, unflinching novel of survival told largely in street dialect, e.E. Charlton-Trujillo enters the lives of teenagers coming of age in the face of spiraling violence among gangs, by police, and at home.
